    Default Ayone use distortion pedals?

I've been thinking about getting one for a while. This one kinda jumps out at me.

How would I have to run it? In the effects loop or thru the front? Are there better ones out there? I use a 5150II and a Soldano SLO-100. Is that overkill?

    The MXR M78 looks interesting.
I use a RAT and it rocks.
    If i used a 5150II i wouldn't think id need a dist pedal.

My main amp these days is a Fender hot rod 2/12 so a dist pedal is needed.
I run mine through the front.
    Sounds great!

Dude it's hard enough to get that sound on a 5150 without a distortion pedal.

Last time I had a distortion pedal is when I was 8. So any recommendations? I currently use a MXR EVH flang and Phase 90, Boss dd-3, MXR Stereo CHorus and a smart gate.

I'm just throwing it out there. I know some people use tube screamers and the like.

you have the setup. what are you looking for? the people who use distortion pedals do not play thru the amps you have. with the setup you have, if you can't get the sound, then you need EVH's hands. you have the rest.

Eddie never used a distortion pedal although he did use a Boss overdrive in the early 90's.
I have a 1991 5150 half stack and i never use an extra distortion pedal with that.
Are u looking for another type of distortion to use on the clean channel?
U may want to look at an overdrive or even a fuzz pedal.
I stopped using my 5150 because there's no where to go with it unless your playing heavy rock or metal and im more indie rock now.

With the amps you're using I'd be more inclined to go for an overdrive or clean boost pedal rather than a distortion. I have used an Ibanez TS-9 to great effect with both a 5150 and a Diezel VH4, just make sure you go for an older TS-9 though, the newer ones just don't sound quite the same.

I have a 5150 combo and a Maxon OD808, but I do not use them for EVH sounds... The Maxon is good for adding a little extra tighness for metal stuff like Arch Enemy, In Flames, Killswitch Engage, Unearth, God Forbid, etc... really tight sound. EVH is more... fluid, you know?

For VHI, the 5150 can get you close enough (but not miraculously close) without an OD or distortion pedal. Check VHoholic's settings around the web...

Also, I believe that speakers are a major factor in VHI's sound. Greenbacks instead of stock 5150s (Sheffields, right?) would get one's sound light years closer to it.

I have found that something that really, but really made a difference was the use of an EQ, in this case a Maxon 6 band EQ. I thought it would be similar to the MXR 6 band EQ that Ed used in VHI and I think it gets closer to it...

Oh and I never heard of ODs or distortions in the loop. Wouldn't that make some excrutiating noise?

I use a Mi Audio Crunch Box with my Blackstar HT-100. I think it does really well when I play anything-covers or originals. I generally just play using the tone that I personally like, as opposed to going after somebody else's, but it does 80's rock/VH very well, IMO.

I love that demo as well, and I've actually had the Jemini pedal for quite some time now. My Marshall and Mesa/Boogie both need no assistance in the crunch/distortion department, but the Jemini is just for some different textures of distortion. You can configure the tube screamer and distortion sides of the pedal a particular way and then it can be like adding two extra channels to your amp. At a gig I used the tube screamer side as a clean boost and the distortion side basically as a distortion/solo boost in a particular song, worked great. Of course this pedal really has nothing to do with a VH sound, but it does work for Vai tunes and of course general purpose covers. I haven't watched that demo in quite a while. There is a lot of processing added for instance when he says something like "here is my clean tone". I believe I possibly heard delay, reverb, and chorus/detune in his clean tone, and then he hit the distortion side of the pedal for that really grainy sound. Also be sure to check out the True Temperament neck on his white Jem7V. That's what you're seeing when it looks like his frets are broken up across the width of the neck.
