Default What Year PV Wolfgang Guitars Were the Best?

I am thinking about picking up a used PV Wolfgang guitar. What year did Peavey produce the best model of the Wolfgang?

    Any feedback would be great!

    Thanks!

the 1st yr quilts and 1st yr black and whites were by far the ones with the best quality control and parts IMO. there are good ones all the way through the years but the early ones and then the later custom shop ones are generally the best.

    Think mines a 1999.
It's a good guitar but my 1992 EVH EBMM beats the pants off it.
The PV wolf is a step backwards in my opinion.

I played EBMM's new in the early 90's and they felt great. My first year quilt Peavey feels just as good as those. Later Peavey's... A little different story. They definitely feel "cheaper" than the EBMM. I've played a lot of later Peavey's and none feel or even sound as good as mine.

People always say the EBMM's neck feels odd but it's the PV Wolf's neck that i just can't get used to.

Ive been playing my EBMM since 92 and it's neck is the most amazing neck ever, it's so broken in.

The color difference from the neck and finished headstock is so obvious.

My PV Wolf does feel cheaper.

I bought my black one in early 97, so I would guess it was a late 96 model.
    I love it.
I would still like an original EBMM one day.

I do think the arch top has something to do with peoples' preference of one to the other. Aren't the necks a little different as well?

    agreed,

I have owned and played all eras of the PVs and I must say, my patent pending 97 black standard is by far the smoothest and best PV I have played.

my original EBMM EVH blue quilt is an amazing playing guitar too and I agree with Johnny on the Music mans also.

As far as the necks go, they are completely different. The neck contour is different as well as the fretboard radius. I'm not sure about the nut width, those may be the same.

As far as I know there weren't any Peavey Wolfgangs released in '96. If so, it was very late '96.

I have yet to encounter a Patent Pending Peavey Wolfgang that wasn't top notch. The four I own are all phenomenal. They started branding the actual patent number on Peavey Wolfgangs in mid-to-late '98. Custom Shop models are also a sure-thing. I have three, and they're all right up there. The best playing, sounding, and feeling Peavey Wolfgang I've ever owned or played is my 2003 dark cherryburst. It's simply a production model and is the only one I own that was built in their Meridian factory. Something about its combination of woods, the way the neck was sanded, those particular pickups and electronics, the breakfast the person assembling it had that day...

There are many more great Peavey Wolfgangs out there than there are problematic ones. I've encountered a couple that just didn't sound all that great (wood), a couple that had small issues (like string alignment--just enough to notice), and a couple with necks that seemed to deviate from the intended contour. I've also seen/heard about a couple of necks that twisted over time. I've probably played at least 100 Wolfgangs, though, and they were for the most part about as consistent as a production guitar can be. Stay away from the Korean Wolfgang Special EXP. THOSE are cheap, and the quality control was all over the place.

I'm in the minority; I prefer the Wolfgang over the EBMM. The EBMM is an amazing guitar--no question at all. I always thought it looked a little funny, though. Kind of fat and stubby with its wide bottom side and short horns. And I really don't like a 10" fingerboard radius. 12" or flatter for me, please. But the EBMMs had quality control from beginning to end. That being said, I think if Ernie Ball had produced anywhere near the same number of EVH guitars as Peavey did Wolfgangs, we would have seen more variance in the quality. I also like the pickups in the Peavey Wolfgang better than the EBMM. (The new EVH Wolfgang pickups are by far my favorite of them all.)

ok all this talk about the PVs has caused me to retire my Kramer for a bit and pull down my Pat/pend 97 black standard PV and jam on it. Its been about a year since I really played it and let me just say..... wow!!!!
Its just as I remembered it.... smooth neck, fast action, top notch quality, beautiful sound and outstanding balance. As I stated before out of all the different color PVs I have played and owned through the years (amber, purple, creme, black, red, green) standards and specials in all different years this one without a doubt has all the qualities I would ever want. I love it and this is precisely the reason why I now own only one PV wolf and its this one. Early black standards are my favorite for sure. Ever since I saw the Humans Being video I have always loved that guitar. Now I love my EBMM EVH too and thats another story but as far as the PVs..... again I cant help but say after jamming on it for about an hour.... I LOVE IT...
now I have played a few custom shop PVs too and those were outstanding as well but I dont speak from too much experience with the custom shop ones however I am sure AT is 100% right. I am sure they are top notch as well.

I'm totally the opposite of you in this respect. I don't like flat radius fingerboards or asymetrical neck contours and that was really the deciding factor why I sold both my EBMM and my '99 tobaccoburst Wolfgang. Don't get me wrong, they were both incredible guitars, solid build and great tone, but I just never liked the necks on either of them althoughthe EBMM was marginally better. I guess it has to do with me playing old Fenders ever since I was a kid (Istill have a couple of genuine '60's Strats and a '59 hardtail), I find the classic 71/2" radius really comfortable and it suits my style.

I have to agree with the EBMMs as well.
I played a few Wolfs and they are real nice but there is something about the EBMMs
they have more oomph to them
punchier for some reason. I have noticed that with all of them.

the Peavey body is slightly more comfy and I wish the EBMM neck was a tad wider like my EBMM Albert Lee HH
