Default Alternative songs/artists you like/listen to

What are some of the "alternative" songs you like or listen to on a regular basis? Here are a few of mine:

The Smiths- "How Soon Is Now?" and "Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me"

The Pixies- "Gouge Away" and "Where Is My Mind"

Fiona Apple- "Shadowboxer" (long story behind that one) and "Criminal"-though it is not a song you want to sing too loudly if you're a guy-I've been a bad, bad girl

Foo Fighters- "Everlong" and "Pretender"-their new album is great!!!
    LSU Tigers 2003 & 2007 National Champs
    Detroit Pistons 2004 NBA Champs

I don't like that term "alternative". When iTunes classifies my music as "alternative", I usually change it to "rock". Alternative to what?

"Alternative" gets tossed around a lot, but what does it actually describe? Are Foo Fighters alternative? I've heard Beastie Boys on alternative stations. Aren't they rap? Nickelback used to be played on alternative stations. Maybe they still are, I don't know.

If "alternative" means "alternative to what is mainstream," then that can fit anyone that doesn't get a lot of airplay. That would exclude every band ever played on alternative radio.

So, what is our criteria here?

I have three genres in my iTunes related to alternative: Alternative, Indie, Grunge (because grunge has gotten a lot of airplay on local alternative radio). Here's a list of the bands that are pretty heavy in my iTunes rotation.

    Alternative:

    Audioslave
    AWOLNATION
    The Black Keys
    Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
    The Bravery
    Cake
    Chevelle
    Collective Soul
    Foo Fighters
    Keane
    Kings Of Leon
    No Doubt
    O.A.R.
    Queens Of The Stone Age
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Silverchair
    Smashing Pumpkins
    Snow Patrol (borderline Indie)
    Stone Temple Pilots
    30 Seconds To Mars

    Indie:

    The Airborne Toxic Event
    Arcade Fire
    Arctic Monkeys
    Band Of Skills
    Death Cab For Cutie
    The Decemberists
    Florence + The Machine
    Foster The People
    Franz Ferdinand
    Gorillaz
The Joy Formidable (new favorites of mine, check out 'The Big Roar'!)
    Kaiser Chiefs
    The Killers
    Modest Mouse
    MUTEMATH
    Silversun Pickups
    The Temper Trap
Two Door Cinema Club (too poppy for my tastes)
    Young The Giant

    Grunge:

    Alice In Chains
    Nirvana
    Pearl Jam
    Soundgarden
    Temple Of The Dog

You think that's a lot of stuff, don't even get me started on prog. The genre of "Alternative" goes down as my second favorite in music, behind of course the Progressive Rock genre

My critera was simply what I define as alternative considering it's a lot of what was played on Q101 before it got shut down.

I think "Alternative" is a very gray area genre by definition, and it's subject to a listener's definition. That's how I believe it, at least.

To me, "alternative" means shit that radio won't play. That's a wide-ass fuckin list.

The last "alternative" shit I liked was a disc from Stiltskin back in '06 called "She".

One could go back as far as 1983 for "alternative" music for me. Saga's "Heads Or Tales" never got any radio airplay, but I loved it.

I guess alternative would be classified as something wouldn't play in any type of regular rotation on a radio station. I never heard of the Pixies or the Smiths until late in college. I'd classify Foo as alternative. Six Feet Under also had great music that fit this bill-if you will (Tom Devlin for example).

Alternative was a genre of music prior to the arrival of Nirvana. Once they came on the scene, Alternative became mainstream. Granted I was big into hair metal during the 80's but here are what I remembered to be Alternative bands prior to 1990. Well at least the alternative kids would be listening to these bands.

    REM
    The Smiths
    The Cure
Edie Brickel and the New Bohemians
    The Church
The Cult (prior to Fire Woman they were considered alternative)
    Violent Femmes
    Concrete Blonde
    The Connells
    The Pixies

Anyway I still listen to the bands above along with other bands that may be considered alternative. However I just lump them into a ROCK genre on my IPOD since that's what it is.

oh, if alternative means stuff not on the radio, everything I listen to is then... I was going with the generic sense of the word... grunge and two finger D-tune crap.

I guess Dream theater would be metal alternative .... kinda... which is one of my favs.

I've been on a small Depeche Mode kick lately. I don't actually own any of their albums, but I'm heavily considering shelling out the money for Violator.

I like alot of the stuff Zachenfoot listed as alternative. Audioslave, Black Keys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Foo Fighters, and Collective Soul are awesome.

Hmm...even though Foo Fighters got played on alternative radio back in the 90's, in my mind they were never "alternative". I seriously consider them a rock band.

    --- --- ---

Alternative groups that I like? Here goes:
    - The Cure -- one of my favorites of all time
    - Radiohead
    - The Smiths
    - Morrissey
    - The Pixies
    - Frank Black
    - R.E.M.
    - Violent Femmes
