that dude doesnt look like much of an eddie fan before fender gave him the task of promoting the gear. more like a slayer fan.

also i see more hardcore metal players use all the 5150 series amps than rock players. it kinda seems like the evh stuff has two niches heavy hardcore metal or eddie van halen clones.
admittedly i use my 5150 mk1 head for metal stuff but find that it can do a plethora of different tones depending on cabs , speakers , channels . knobs , guitars ect ect. its not as one dimensional as one thinks. but like brett i admit it does get a bit monotone on the ears after awhile and if i had the money id get a soldano

my thought too is that younger kids have so locked into the 5150 is a hardcore metal amp that maybe fender pushed for that third superdrive channel. if you youtube "5150 amp" its almost all metal tone demonstrations.

    All good points.
I will say though, and it's just an opinion. As a guy who owned a 91' SLO 100 Soldano with the snakeskin Tolex. (Ooooooooooo ahhhhhhhhh.....I know...Lucky guy huh?) I really didn't get all the hoopla over them. Up until they came out, there were'nt relly great high gain amps that didn't still need some push through the front end to really cook. At the time I guess they were a really good high gain amp that ran fairly quiet on their own, compared to the 5150's imfamous hiss, but honestly I found it even more monotone in some respects, at least on high gain. It was nice gain, but to me, it just lacked some dynamics. It did have better cleans, the tonestack was more responsive and shapable, but I was actually more partial to the 5150 because it had a little more of that Marshallesque "Krang". I also liked some of the Rivera gear too actually, but I hated their look, and the metal grilles on the speakers. Anyone who's mic'd those know what I'm talking about.
The Soldano had a real cool factor though. Very well made. I never had an issue with it (except one of the microswitches went when a headstock clipped it, but replaced free of charge.)
I dunno....I guess in retrospect I never should have parted with it given how much they go for these.

I'm fairly confident that if Ed was doing those demos, they would sell double, if not triple the amount of those heads and cabs. It used to be that if an amp had anything to do with EVH, all the metal guys would run away from it -- happened all the time with the Peaveys. A few years later, they figured out that the 5150 was about the best amp they could get their hands on for what they were doing musically, EVH endorsement or not, so that's why you see a lot of metal dudes with 5150's with the logos stripped off....

Anyway, I think that Fender must still think there is that stigma of the "guy who used a synthesizer in an 80's rock song and it got wildly popular so he shall be cursed and outcast from our metal kingdom forever" going on, so to compensate, they've got this dude doing the PR and demo circuit.

And unfortunately, I still have no idea how that amp really sounds after all those videos. If I didn't know better from playing the 100W version in person, I'd think those things were a MAJOR downgrade from the Peaveys. (Full disclosure: the best guitar tone I've ever heard was from a 5150 II lead channel, and although I LOVE the ultra versatile 5150 III that can do a lot more, I still like the Peavey's lead tone probably a little more.)

It will be interesting to see what the new finishes will be for the new Wolfs coming in January.... That Chris fellow also mentions a Grey Stealth Wolfie, too. Should look cool. I guess we will have the option of Maple or Ebony on all the Wolfie necks from now on....

I watched the videos and it does seem like they are really expanding the line quite a bit. I was actually a bit surprised that the dude mentioned that JJ tubes are coming with the new amps. It's the first time I remember any EVH branded amp naming the brand of tubes that are going in it...

As far as the guitars... No thanks... I was a bit tempted by the Wolfgang Stealth Special but I couldn't bring myself to buy a Japanese guitar... The US versions are way overpriced... So, I'm doing what anyone looking at those guitars should do, spend the money in between the two and get a custom guitar built.

I don't know, those new Wolfgangs just do nothing for me. They seem really overpriced and they don't sound that much different than a Peavey Wolf and certainly are nowhere near the build quality of an EBMM. I just don't know how they justify the prices.

The amp seems nice, and light years better than the original 5150 (which I have). If I had the money I'd actually think about getting one...not that I play out enough really to warrant it anymore. But the guitars, blech.

The new wolfs appear to have a lot of bells / whistles , but I can't imagine they are worth the asking price. In some cases, they are more than a Les Paul

To your point, they are VERY similar to the Peavey WG, so I've resisted my guitar fetish and I have not purchased one either. My Peavey WG is still so much fun to play.
I do like the stop tail evh with the tune-o-matic, but not enough to part with the cash.
This (Guitar) is an expensive hobby d

There definitely hasn't been enough of an "evolution" from the Peavey to the Fender to warrant buying one.

The Peavey quilt top in 1997 either retailed for $1799 or $1899, I can't remember. I know I paid $1435 for mine. So, accounting for inflation using 1435 and 1899, the retail of a new one in 2011 should be just under $2700 and sell for just over $2000. The new Fender retails with quilt top for over $4000 and sells for about $3150. There's no way in hell that guitar is worth even close to that. First of all, it has that ugly ass quartersawn neck. Where's the birdseye, Ed? Also, the body shape didn't evolve or change very much at all. There is not anywhere close to a $1000 worth of "goodies" to justify the cost. Add up high and low friction pots, Stainless frets, and every other "upgrade" over the Peavey and it's probably 20 or 30 bucks at the most.

Sorry, Ed, this time around my money is going somewhere else... It makes me a hell of a lot happier knowing the money I'm parting with is going to someone who takes a lot of pride in their craft and cares about the customer...

You're right, and my opinion is there is no justification for ANY mass produced guitar to be much beyond 2.000 bucks, and even that's being a bit liberal.
The cost has gone way up over the past decade for US made Standard model guitars, some as much as 500%, yet automation has also taken over many of the tasks they once had to pay skilled teams of people to do by hand that you paid for in a company like say Gibson for example.
That said, yes, there are some choice woods out there that are very expensive, but basswood, though it is going up, is still considered a very sustainable, quickly replenished utilitarian wood. Yet Fender charges over 3 grand for a mainly basswood, and honestly a lot of fairly sub par maple tops.

Compare this to a small luthier I know who builds absolutely beautiful handcrafted acoustic guitars, (about 4 or 5 a month). He charges around 2.000 dollars to start, the woods are premium, and he does everything by hand, from planing and sounding the tops, to cutting, and shaping all the reinforcement, bracing, he even makes the individual rosettes for the soundholes. The only thing he doesn't make is the tuners, and the fretwire. His bridge saddle and nut material is usually a bone. And here's the kicker...You'd be hard pressed to find one power tool with the exception of a compressor for lacquer.
Now that attention to detail and pure craftsmanship is worth that kind of money and more. A CNC machine carving out 6 bodies at once.....Kind of tough to justify when put in perspective.

it almost like fender and ed are blatantly saying "pure profit" about the guitar and amps.

i remember buying my wolf special with a hardshell case , perfectly set up and intonated out of the box for 680 bucks. i think the maple cap special was like 250 bucks more wich i liked better than the arched top. id rather spend my money upgrading my special with a real floyd and pearloid tuners and a refret. save myself 1500 bucks lol.

also i'm thinking about having my 5150 head modded by FJA amps. they have all kinds of options and the highest priced mod is around 600 dollars....again save myself 1500 bucks.

the evh guitars and amps just scream of for the fanboy with lots of disposable income demographic, not the gigging or true guitar player. i definetly dont fit into the rich fanboy demographic. what happened to the great guitar for the money concept ?

LMAO, like Tyson right? The weird thing is that this guy's look is 180 degrees from his demeanor. When I listen to him describe the 50 watter, he's calm, composed, articulate, and has a very reaffirming voice. Then when I actually look at the vid I'm like WTF? And the playing, well didn't Ed say something in years gone by that there's no such thing as bad music, it's just music you don't like? I like this guy's clean playing and his sweep picking (I always wanted to do that as a parlor trick), but the rest is just drop D sludge, chugging along, and playing as fast as humanly possible. I don't see myself humming along with these lead parts like I would with something of Ed's like the solo in SMGAD. With the new Wolfgangs, I have to agree with others and say that while "Fender gets it", I don't get it. I'll be holding onto my Peavey. I do really, really like that 50 watt head though. Been thinking about picking up a Vox AC15 lately though for something else to fool around with, and that's at a lower price point so there goes my 5150 III 50w money.
