Default I can't believe someone paid for that!!!

A couple of days ago a young guy I know asked me to setup his Les Paul as he wasn't happy with the work he'd had done by a local, proffesional tech. Here's what I was faced with....

The guy charged him £45 and kept the guitar for 2 weeks before giving it back to him in this state. To say I was shocked and appalled is an understatement.
I was just wondering if any of you guys have had and similar experiences.
I have sorted the guitar now, it actually plays like a dream and I delivered it back to him myself and only charged him £10!

    Whoa! Haha!
    That's unbelievable.
I actually just did a video I have to put on YT along these lines, but about tuning/intonation issues with Floyds when locking the nut. In the past year I've had 6 or 7 players come to me asking what is wrong with their guitar because they tune, and zero out the microtuners after a string change, then when they lock the nut, some strings are going sharp. So I did a video showing the string retainer bar being to high, and the nut pulling the string sharp as it's screwed down. This is after "pro setups" too.
There's some real fucking hacks out there taking money for stuff they know nothing about, or at least care to check properly.

Apparently, the 'tech's' reasoning for this was that the G-string was buzzing at the 3rd fret and this was the only way to get rid of it. After re-setting the Stop Bar and lowering the Tune-o-matic to what I consider to be a 'normal' height, it was indeed buzzing quite badly. After a little inspection I discovered the truss rod was totally lose, 1 1/2 turns and the whole thing was sorted and it plays perfectly now.

There's five hack techs out there for every one good tech. And that's the case all over the world, apparently.

In today's day and age there's no reason why a player shouldn't know a few things about adjusting his own instrument. If you're anything beyond a starter, you really should know about truss rod adjustment and intonation. This is merely my opinion, of course.

I'll bite, what's the problem in the original pic? I know squat about a LP so I'm hoping for my own sanity it's an issue unique to a LP.

The stopbar is almost dead level with the bridge, and no downward force on the saddles, so poor intonation, limited sustain, possible rattles of the bridge studs in the anchors...let alone strings popping out when bending etc.
Just a very poor setup to compensate for a slight neck tweak.
It would be the equivelant to having a Floyd Rose a 1/4" to a 3/8" higher than normal to get rid of a buzz if the neck had a backbow just to not touch the trussrod. Just very poor service.
I've run into techs like this, and the stuff they are capable of is frightening. Like trussrod adjustments under full string tension rotating the rod well beyond the reccomended 1/4 turn within a 24hr. period simply because "it never broke before"
Then it happens, and they usually never do it again!
An expensive leson if it's a top of the line Paul or PRS as an example.

I fully agree with you mate. I'm actually going to teach the guy who's guitar this is how to do it all for himself after Christmas is out of the way, I think he's getting some new pickups for it so I'll combine teaching him with installing them.

I have two Les Pauls, one a Gibson LP Custom in tobacco sunburst (bought new for $1K in '88 when Gibson still meant something regarding quality), and an Epiphone ZW LP Custom bullseye model just for fun. I went through three of the Epi models until I found an excellent one, and that thing almost has the mojo of the '88 Gibson that I have. Anyway, when I saw this pic I almost fell out of my chair laughing. The name, address, and phone number of this "tech", along with that pic should be posted on some kind of guitar service reference web site if such a thing exists. That is bad work to the 10th power. The guy is either a complete hack or never did a Les Paul and does not understand the dynamics of the bridge and stop bar components. With so many Les Pauls and LP clones out there you'd think everyone claiming to be a tech would have worked on a ton of them. Some people screw the stop bar all the way down and then wrap the strings up and over the top, ala ZW himself. I did it just for yucks on my Epi LP and you could argue that it does change the dynamics just a hair giving you slightly easier bends. But having the stop bar parallel with the TOM bridge, LMAO.

Most people are afraid of the truss rod and do not understand its relationship to string action. In truth I don't believe you can harm anything by making small truss rod adjustments and observing the results, then going a little further or backing off. Probably the only time a "regular" (non-tech) person should not touch it is if it feels like it is stuck. You certainly don't want to be cranking on a stuck truss rod- that is a job for a true pro, which is probably very hard to find. And for EVH enthusiasts who have unfinished maple neck guitars, truss rod adjustments almost have to be a fact of life if the neck is subjected to wide ranges of humidity levels.

I've messed with my truss rods for years. If you make small changes at a time, are gentle and don't force it, you'll be fine. I've had to adjust mine and I live in a climate that rarely changes temperatures very much here in So Cal.

I agree with AT about learning stuff like this. I have to adjust my ebmm a lot because of the climate changes here in TX... pain in the arse, but it's good to know it.

As many guitars as I have you'd figure I'd know how to set intonation on a floyd or a truss rod adjustment. Nope. Scares the shit out of me. I can handle small things on my guitars but I'm terrified of fucking them up. And I've been playing for 24 years. Sad isn't it?
