Review: Ameristar Casino…Kansas City, 22 June 2001

I’m not very good at summarizing…so I will just ramble, and everyone can deal with it…

When the concert dates were first announced, I was excited for Dave. I thought it would be so cool to be able to go…but I just don’t do those kind of things. I’m going through some personal shit in my life which made me say: “Why the hell don’t I do these things?” I thought about it more, and more, and more…then I decided. I WILL attend Dave’s opening show…and I’ll go to the second one since I’m traveling this far anyway!

For those of you that don’t know…”this far” for me is all the way from California! I was about to embark on a Grateful Dead groupie sort-of road trip.

I arrived at the Ameristar Casino on the evening of June 21st…went and walked around hoping to bump into Dave…no such luck.

The next morning, I went to the bakery shop in the building and the old lady at the register noticed my Dave shirt…then she told me that the night before, Dave had come by to get something…gave another cashier his autograph and kissed her hand. How cool would that be??? He also supposedly ate at a restaurant in the casino and tipped the waiters each $60. Take all that with a grain of salt…I don’t know how credible the old lady was! To top it off, I was walking around during the same time frame…bad timing on my part.

I walked down to the Grand Pavilion around 3:30 or 4:00 just to see if anything was going on…the band was doing a sound check! Bart sounded absolutely fantastic! The playing sounded tight and like the albums. I was officially excited. Also met a couple that drove 800 miles from Mississippi to see the show. Dave fans are definitely dedicated! Met another couple before the show from KC…we had a good conversation…then the wife decided to let me know that she always preferred Sam to Dave. I just rolled my eyes and laughed at her…

There were signs posted outside that said no cameras, videos, or sound recordings allowed. I snuck in my camera though. Had great seats…left center B6. I noticed a “Got Roth?” shirt in the center aisle a few rows back…Loons, was that you? I was gonna try to talk to you (or whoever) after the show, but couldn’t locate the person…

I asked the security lady how strict they were going to be about picture-taking. She said that DLR didn’t want any pictures…and that violators would be personally escorted out of the show. Needless to say, I didn’t take any pictures…I wasn’t going to take a chance even if she may have been bullshitting me…

There was a chick from the DLRML (I think) that was in the row in front of me…I knew it was her because she had a tatoo of DLR on her ankle…very cool. Both she and her friend received club Dave passes and were absolutely thrilled.

The show started about 40 minutes late…then Dave strutted across the stage in all his glory. He looked absolutely FANTASTIC from head to toe!! The crowd went wild.

Dave’s outfits this tour are just too cool. He first came out in leather pants and jacket, suspenders, and no shirt…and he was all that and more! He took off the jacket and suspenders after a few songs…his game is better than ever! Folks, that is NOT the body of a 46 year old…

At the break, he changed into baggy cargo-looking pants with a black belt…and he looked fantastic in those also! THE MAN HAS GOT IT GOING ON…

He went throught the posted set list with the exception of Yankee Rose and DOA.

When Dave said he had the high note, he wasn’t fucking around! His voice was totally incredible! He was spot-on during the ENTIRE show.

The concert was fan-fucking-tastic…but my favorite parts were Tobacco Road and Ice Cream Man….Mean Street was ultra cool with a little different vibe than the album.

Dave did some of his old lines…with a fresh attitude, and had some new ones. He even spoke a little Spanish at the ICM intro. He was definitely having fun with the microphone down his pants…something he seemed obsessed about that first night…but that’s Dave, so it’s cool. He did some martial arts with the mike stand a few times, and some of the usual kicks. At the very end of the show he jumped off the drum riser in perfect form.

I have seen Dave 3 times with VH and 3 times solo…and this concert was right up there…in fact I think the singing was probably one of the best I’ve been at…his voice is incredible.

For those of you who doubt Dave’s voice…fuck you. The man is unstoppable. Who needs Ed when Dave’s rocked and loaded??? Not me!

The $75 ticket was well worth the money…

All I can say is: GO SEE DAVE AT A VENUE NEAR U!!!!!! You will NOT be disappointed.

Stay tuned for my second review…

Great review, kat! Sorry we didn't get a chance to hook up. I was the guy wearing the Arkansas baseball jersey. The guy with the "got Roth?" shirt was diamondD4 ever from the Dome. He was the one who posted the first review EARLY Saturday morning.

I agree with your assessment on the KC show. Dave was "the game" that night. He is DEFINITELY ready to go...whenever or wherever that may be. Now, off to read the MN review!

    Thanks for the report kat!

    You might not need Eddie...

    But Dave does.

    (And vice/versa. )

    Great review, Kat.

I'm glad you 'rambled' instead of just giving a summary. That's great that you made the trip from Cali.
