Default Roth Driving Force Behind Van Halen/Interscope Signing

    http://www.vhnd.com/
Van Halen To Sign With Interscope

    By Shirley Halperin, THR

Iconic rock band Van Halen are set to sign with Interscope Records, says a source familiar with the negotiations. The deal is expected to be finalized next week, marking the first time in 35 years that the band will not release music through Warner Music, its longtime label home.

It had been rumored — and reported — that the band was joining the Columbia Records roster. In fact, an insider tells The Hollywood Reporter that the contract for the Sony deal was drawn up and approved but hadn’t been signed when Universal Music stepped into the picture.

The signing was a group effort involving UMG chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge, UMG International COO Max Hole, Interscope Geffen A&M vice chairman Steve Berman and Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine, who, says a source, “heard the band was available and wanted to work with them. It was decided at the 11th hour.” What came next was a series of meetings that presented the band with a global plan that included extensive marketing, merchandising, touring and, of course, recordings.

So what derailed the Columbia deal? The usual rock band complications, says an insider. While the group reunited with original singer David Lee Roth in 2006, the Sony label could not come to terms with Roth, who has a separate management, legal and accounting team than the other three members, guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his son Wolfgang (who replaced bassist Michael Anthony) and drummer Alex Van Halen. The main issue for Roth? He was apparently adamant about being on a west coast label. “He was never on board [with Columbia],” says the source. “It was as complicated as anyone would imagine, when one side says black, the other says white. The label was pretty skeptical that things would work out.”

It’s expected that as frontman, Roth will have to carry much of the marketing burden and it seems the band members ultimately want their singer to be happy with the deal which is why they went with Universal’s west coast-based Interscope.

A new album, their first studio effort since 1984, is believed to be nearly finished with the hope that it can be released in 2012. The band is expected to make a “special announcement” on Nov. 30 at the Grammy Awards nominations concert, which will air live on CBS from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater.

An Interscope rep had no comment.

    This is great news.
Progress of any kind from the VH camp = good for fans.
Shit has went ungodly slow throughout this entire process.
Hopefully now that they have new blood handling the inner workings
the car will finally be able to get out of the driveway.
What exactly do you think will go down on Nov. 30th?
    Live performance?
    Just announcement of album?
    Tour dates revealed?
Personally just hoping whatever it is they step up & own that shit like they mean it.
    How about:
"Look Fuckers We're Back! & this new material is gonna kick more ass than any ass kicker has ever kicked~!"

I've learned not to believe anything I read about these guys until it's actually official and even then I only believe about 1/4 of it.

The news has reached Dutch news sites. Since they have one fact wrong (the fact that the album is finished already) it's reasonable to assume they didn't get the news from a fan site. Must have reached them by another source.

I could believe alot of this, Dave is now Ed's only option cos Sammy is not interested and Ed was badly burned by the Cherone fiasco. Also, we know Ed's not interested in doing the media side of things so give Dave the ball and let him run with it.

On 30th Nov, I'm expecting the title and release date of the first single at least and hopefully the title and release date of the new album. I doubt they'll mention specific tour dates yet and there will certainly be no live performance though they'll no doubt announce a live performance at the actual Grammy Awards.

I just hope the announcement isn't that they are going to "premier" the new single at the Awards or we've got even longer to wait!!

I don't think Sammy did alot of the PR shit for Van Hagar and that he carries that same "vibe" that Dave does/did when he does. Yes Sam did interviews but its just not on the same level of promotion of what Dave has done in the past. I expect some big thing to happen with Dave at the helm of the ship. Whether or not he drives it into an iceberg remains to be seen, and by "ice berg" I mean make Eddie crazy again.

I kind of think this is a more tame dare I say it, "grown up" Dave. He still has some of that old flare but I think that both he and Ed have been humbled over the last 15 years or so. They NEED each other now professionally.

If Dave is doing PR like he did in the old days, I'm fine with it. As long as they use technology from 2012 and not 1978.

    Technology from the pasture.

    P.S. I'm so excited now.

Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

LMAO, I was waiting for your reply. What's that old saying, the third time's the charm? I think I've read this exact story three times now so it has to be true.

Your constant bashing of this band has gotten really stale.

We get it - you hate VH without Sammy and Mike. You make that pretty clear about 15 times a day..
