Default Part of Eddie's guitar solo from "Live without a net" was cut out.

Here's something a lot of people don't know.

Eddie plays some blues in the middle of "316" that we never saw.
If you watch his solo on "LWAN" you would never know unless you have heard the original audio, i used to have it years ago and wish i still did.

The edit is at 45 seconds.
A give away is his cigarette.
You see him put it down at 23 seconds and at 45 seconds it's back on his guitar.

You can hear the blues part on this boot from another show from the tour.

Eddie would also start his solo spot sometimes with Beethoven's "Fur Elise".
Although it's been so long since i heard the original unedited
"LWAN" guitar solo audio i don't remember if he played it that night also.

Here he is playing it on another show.

On 5-9-86 in Detroit Alex played drums along with Eddie on a very bluesy version of "316".

I pretty much learned to play guitar as a kid by watching Eddie's solo spot on "LWAN" a billion times.
That piece of video was and still is a huge part of my guitar playing life.

Funny thing for me is, the LWAN solo made me stop trying to learn the guitar. I used to tinker around when I was a kid, wanting to grow up to be like my hero. After hours and hours, day after day of viewing that solo I said forget it I'm done. I figured there was no way in hell I was ever going to come near that. It totally discouraged me instead of inspiring me to get better. Seems stupid to me now all these years later that I thought that way but, oh well.

    Total opposite for me.

The "LWAN" guitar solo made me want to play guitar no matter if i could play what Eddie's playing or not - & play a Kramer 5150 too!
    LOL!
I love that guitar so much!
It's just the coolest guitar in the world to me.

I watch this now and it affects me just like it did when i was 13 years old!

When i was a kid i used to have friends pause "LWAN" anywhere during the show with the sound off and i would come in the room and tell em what song it was on.

That's how much i watched that VHS tape.
    Knew every frame.

Been meaning to buy it on DVD for a while.
    Wish it was on itunes.

Hey johnnybeane, Ed used to say that he could play Clapton note for note. Being influenced by Ed can you play that LWAN solo? I'm sure you can, but what I am trying to say is does E'ds music come naturally to you or are you still amazed after all these years. I hope my question doesn't sound dumb.

Hey CaboChris, you are not the only one that feels this way. I have read a lot of interviews from different guitar players, old and young, and my conclusion is that:

Along with Eddie's influence, came all the 80's shredding mania / players that copied him... BUT... also a lot of players got disencouraged because of how impossible they thought it was to play like that.

So we may say that Eddie brought a lot of damage to the guitar world, although his overall contribution is ultra positive - of course.

Actually, we all know how all the 80's guitar frenziness ended when the musical scene got fed up with the guitar racing competitions...(grunge )

I appreciate your post GOLATTARI. Being a perfectionist all my life, I have a tendency when someting gets difficult and I cant do something exactly how I want, my instinct is to quit. I have to fight this everyday of my life. That is what happened when I saw Ed. When I saw Ed play it was mind-boggling to me. No guitarist has EVER moved me like that and I doubt no one ever will. His personal problems and addictions aside, I will ALWAYS have a soft spot for him even though he pisses me of nowadays.

Of course Johnny will answer this question, but I think if he could play that entire LWAN guitar solo note for note he would not even be speaking with us mere mortals. LMAO That solo is the plateau of Ed's entire bag of tricks and all of his playing styles up to that point in time. Plus he no doubt had the fire in his belly to prove the band could still kick ass with a new singer. I think the guitar solos on each subsequent tour after 5150 went down slightly in quality. But we'll always have that LWAN tape/dvd/youtube to watch- it certainly is inspirational, isn't it? There are some guitarists who can capture the mojo of Ed's playing but it's really difficult. IMO of course, the thing is that when you are trying to cover his playing style you have to hold back a bit to remain in your comfort zone to hit the right notes, right bends, proper whammy bar inflections, etc. When Ed was playing it back then I don't think he was holding back at all and you can hear it with the end result. Still, there are some VH tribute band guitarists who come pretty damn close, and some others as well. I think the version of Eruption from the first album is the guitar solo that quite a number of guitarists can nail pretty well. But keep that up for 10+ minutes like on LWAN, no way.

ps- When the first album came out in '78 I had only been playing guitar for two years. When I heard Eruption my jaw hit the floor and it almost made me quit. At the time I was playing in a Beatles tribute band of all things! But I kept playing all these years. You really can't be a perfectionist when it comes to trying to learn Van Halen songs, at least you shouldn't to the point where it makes you quit. You should pick up a guitar again!

Eddie's guitar style did come naturally when i first started playing.
Like a lot of you i grew up wanting to be like him but as i got older and into other players like Andy Summers for instance i started to use their sound and style and make it my own.

I started to burn out on Eddie in the late 90's and got into other players not like Eddie.

Eddie still inspires me like seeing the "LWAN" video makes me want to play but do my own thing.

I remember in 1995 i was using a Ernie Ball EVH guitar and a 5150 half stack as my main gear and started to think that i didn't want people to see me on stage using that stuff because they would think i was trying to be too much like Eddie.

I guess my guitar playing was very "Eddie" back then & it was around that time i started to burn out on him.

I stopped using a floyd rose and a locking nut, put my Kramer focus 1000 away.

Now a days i play a GMW 5150 guitar and it's one of my main guitars but i don't have long hair anymore and really don't play like Eddie anymore, i do my own thing.

Wasn't the story behind the addition of "Fur Elise" to Ed's solo in the middle of the 5150 tour because of a bet between the brothers as to what key it was in?

...ahhh, the glory days: When it actually meant something to be a VH fan...
