Default Help with VH Timeline from 93-95

    hello All,

I know alot of you are really geeked for some upcoming new vh and all that good stuff but I was hoping you guys could help me out a bit.

    I have bits and pieces of VH stuff that they did from the last show of the RHRN tour up through the start of the balance tour and I was hoping to fill in the blanks as far as exactly what went down between those tours and how Sam and Ed's relationship got so bad so fast. Here's what I know but I don't have dates for any of this stuff (some is prolly in the vh encyclopedia but I don't know where mine is);

RHRN tour ends-I know there is some tension here (sam talks about it in his book) but I don't think it was super bad, Sam interviews Ed for a guitar magazine (the interview is titled Sammy Drills Eddie) and they talk glowingly about each other for the most part (you "inspire" me..."your the best" etc).

Sammy does the Bridge School Benefit and brings Ed out introducing him as "my dear friend and favorite musician of all time"

Somewhere in here Ed and Sam do an interview for Rolling Stone that was shown on the RnR HOF video (where Ed says "I'm Sammy Hagar" amd Sam says "And I'm Eddie Van Halen") they both seem to be getting along

Sam and Ed do Elwoods House of Blues radio show both playing acoustic guitars and having a great time.

    Lefler dies

    sam decides to do unboxed

ed and al tell Mike he can't perform with sam on one of the late night shows (don't know which one it was)

sam and mike perform at the bammies

vh start to look for a replacement manager

vh interview potential producers for what would become Balance

    etc, etc....

I just have never been able to put together an very good timeline in my head for the above stuff

I know this might be trivial but any help would be appreciated.

I don’t know if this is relevant, but I recall them talking about calling the next album, Balance, “The Club,” named after Ed Leffler. Apparently that was his nickname.

Sure seems like when Leffler died and the brothers were informed of the Sammy side deals that the trust between them and Sam was broken. You'll never know that for sure. The brothers don't talk about it and Sam's memory of the events have to be viewed as his opinion as much as fact. 4 people know the truth so unless they all collaberate on a book, you won't know.

I'm just trying to see what happened and when it happened I guess. I know alot of what I thought I knew about vh was an act but I still would like to have some kind of timeline....that vid of ed and sam talking during the RnR HOF induction really blew my mind for some reason.

If you have the time, this is well worth a read:

    http://halen.com/evh/index.php?name=...asc&highlight=

From Sammy's Unreleased Biography from years ago.
A lot more dirt and detail in there than in Red.
Covers almost exclusively the 93-96 years as well!

Mine is already ordered from Amazon!

ps: can't order from VHSTORE anymore since they are using that "International Checkout". And I used to buy tons of things from them, from books to guitar gear... when the shipping costs weren't unreal...

Eddie & Sammy did the "I'm Sammy Hagar" "And I'm Eddie Van Halen" swap for radio also.
I remember hearing them do it on KRQR San Francisco in 1994 which is the same time it was also filmed in that video interview u saw on the RRHOF.

I was at the 1994 Bammies and Sammy & Mike aka "Los Tres Gusanos" killed!
I saw Sammy after the show and he was so wasted he couldn't even talk, it took 2 guys to drag him to his town car.

Saw Sammy again b4 the 2001 Bay area music awards - the bammies were called that by this point - and told him about last time i saw him, he said something like just wait till this show is over!

This is a great subject, cause I enjoyed reading THE INSIDE timelines, and they got up to the end of 1993.

In early 94' VH played a gig after a golf charity day cause there was a metal edge feature on it. Sammy had the short curly hair. It was a private function though.

Sammy did a few tv spots for "Unboxed", he played "High hopes" on Letterman. He also did a charity thing with Melissa Etheridge and sang "Honkytonk woman" with her. (I've got both of these on old VHS somewhere).

When Ray Daniels came on board as manager, he noticed the friction with Sammy and Eddie and he suggested that Gary Cherone join the band.

I'll try think of some more stuff during my day at work. LOL.

But this new Eddie book looks good. I will be getting it off amazon too.

In early February 1993, Dave and Ed bumped into each other on the streets of Manhattan. They each gave accounts of the meeting; you both of them together and you get the whole picture. All in all, the meeting went well from Ed's point of view. This was just before the live album was released. Ed and Al heavily remixed and re-recorded the material, so Sammy had to recut a lot of vocal takes and he was really upset about it. Right after this rather HUGE debacle, Ed runs into Dave...and it goes well. There's something really wild about that.

They did a rare one-off show at the Whisky in March of 1993 before heading off to Europe for the first time since 1984. Apparently, a large number of Europeans did not know that Dave was no longer with the band and blamed red-white-and-blue Sammy as the reason VH didn't go to Europe for so long. This was March and April.

They came back to the US for a fall tour jaunt with Vince Neil. Sammy drank heavily while touring with Neil. Then crazily, that July, Ed had got a 1-inch beetle-type insect lodged in his ear during an outdoor set that came out of his ear in his hotel room still alive. Other bizarre tour occurrences included Ed's limo breaking down in Houston and tried to flag a ride from fans...

That's just part of 1993 in a few paragraphs...

I heard that Eddie woke up in horrible pain at his hotel and found the beetle in his ear.
The beetle was then kept in a bottle on the hotel's front desk.

Ed discovered it in the middle of the night when it started fluttering inside his ear canal. He tried to bang it out, not knowing what it was, and when he'd bang it, it'd stop. Then it would start up again. Ed said he carried around saline solution for a "nasal condition" (!!!) and he used that to wash out his ear and out comes the bug. He said he put it in a matchbox just to prove he wasn't crazy. He took it to Al's room and showed him. It didn't actually have anything to do with the hotel at all -- it just happened at the hotel. The bugs were actually flying around the lights and stuff that night in Boston and kept whizzing the band members and amazingly one got stuck in Ed's ear.

He also said the doctor told him he could've done SERIOUS damage to his ear drum, so all in all, it was a pretty serious incident.

EVH: "We were playing outdoors in Boston, and there were all
these bugs flying around; June bug type things. I didn’t think
anything of it, and after the show I went to the hotel and went
to sleep. About six in the morning, I get this excruciating
fucking pain in my ear. At first I thought it was part of a dream,
and I slapped myself around the ear, and it stopped. So I think
that I must be crazy and I go back to sleep. An hour later,
same thing. Aaaaagghh! I wake up again. I’ve always had nasal
problems, and I have this saline solution spray, so I spray it in
my ear, thinking, ‘There’s got to be something in there!’ After I
spray it, I whack myself on the head a couple of times, and out
comes this bug almost an inch long! And it’s still alive! There’s
this fucking June bug from my ear in the sink! I didn’t think
anybody would believe me, so I put it in a matchbox and took
it up to my brother’s room, and said, ‘Look what crawled out of
my ear.’ It was amazing. Then the doctor said it was real close
to my eardrum and could have actually wasted my ear."

Rolling Stone reported that the insect was a beetle.

    -------------------------------------------------------

This happened on the evening of July 9, 1993.

I came on tonight just to post about the Eddie meets Dave in NYC, but Kevin beat me too it, but thats cool.
I read that Val and Ed were walking along central park and it was Val that saw Dave, and then they started chatting.
    It would've been 8 and a half/9 years since they'd spoke.

Another thing I remember from '94 is the songtitles mentioned for (what would be) "Balance".
    "Cul De Sac"
"Damned man in amsterdam" (which became "Amsterdam")
    "Motherlode" (Which became "7th seal")
    "Baby come down"
"The love" (Which was a re-working of "Ever since you came" from H.S.A.S and would later be on Wabos "Red Voodoo")
"You never know" (From the "F.U.C.K" sessions was tried again)
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"
