Default Why is so much emphasis put on clothing?

Why are people so prissy these days? Why are there so many rules for how you look? And why do people follow them?

You know you want to cut the sleeves off your shirt (yes you). Why don't you do it?
I know there have been styles of dress through the years, but throughout the years there were still non conformists with holes in the jeans, maybe even holes in the shirt, Broke-in shoes. Not today.
Yes I think there was a time when your shoes were new and finally they were broken in. Now shoes have to look brand new, scruff is not allowed and cut off shirt sleeves are a no no.
Is anyone else tired of the style police?

Seeing how my entire wardrobe is Lacoste and Lucky jeans I have no opinion.

Really depends on the crowd....but I think people have always put emphasis on clothing. Some things don't change.

i'm well aware that this is not the point of the thread, but LLFHS is referencing the song "Inside" off of 5150 from 1986. here's the deal; i love this song. loved it the first day i bought the TAPE, no cd's then boys and girls, love it now. unless i'm a complete idiot, which i very well may be, Mikey is hammering the bass all through the song. unless that's Ed on keyboards, that's the most Mike was highlighted in the Sam-era by far. love the bass line, love the fuck-off attitude, love hearing their voices on tape, love hearing them bullshit with each other like actual FRIENDS!! anyway, i think the vibe is that most VH fans don't dig this song, i'm gonna stand up for it. i dig this song. always have, always will.

Agreed. My friends and I don't necessarily follow many trends. We just wear our band t-shirts and jeans. Around here I don't see too many "trendy" or "indie" dressed kids, although there are too many wannabe thugs and rappers.

I know, what's with the saggy pants already? It's 15 years old by now move on.
Also, I hate when you see these guys wearing a baseball cap and the bill is flat across with no curve in it and they have it over their ears....stupid.

You can look back at Van Halen and see the styles change. Van Halen bell bottoms and disco shirts then to basically be the first to wear straight legs. In 86' Eddie was wearing Hammer pants way before Hammer. In 91' they were wearing those long t-shirts ala boys to men Lol.

Never paid attention. I still wear t-shirts, jeans, and Vans 90% of the time, like I have since I was 13. I'm 40 years old, stopped worrying about being trendy a long time ago. Frankly I don't think I ever thought about clothes people wore...wasn't that big of a deal to me.

Me, too, except replace Vans with three-stripe Adidas or black boots.

    I don't understand.

You wonder why there's so much emphasis on clothing, insisting we do whatever we want, yet people who sag the pants and wear their hats a certain way, dressing the way they want to, are wrong?

I think it looks just as stupid, I'm just a bit confused.

As for me, band or sports shirt/jersey, jeans, Converse All-Stars/Mossimo sneakers, sometimes a baseball/snow cap. I'm a guy of very simple taste.
