Anyone know the story behind why Van Halen opened 2 shows for Bon Jovi. I believe in was June 1995 in Europe.

My point being they are both big bands. Why didn't they alternate?

Because Bon Jovi is way bigger in Europe than Van Halen.

i must reiterate- bon jovi is HUGE in europe... the females over there think he is elvis...

hardly anyone i have talked to from europe has ever even heard of van halen...

if van halen ever reconvenes- they need to hire a better european publicist/marketer or something...

I have an interview with Ed on video I think it was from an Italian network that was covering one of their warmup shows for "Balance" from Milam Italy or from another show from Europe. He talks about that very issue. I'll give it another look when I get home to make sure of the details. It was basically that Jon and Ed are good friends and Jon asked Ed to play a couple of shows with them and Ed said sure. It really was no big deal to them to open.
A lot of naysayers look to this as a low point for the band and it is actually quite the opposite. Just a couple of friends helping each other out.

Pretty sad considering they were born there.....

I thought all musicians wanted to return to their homelands & conquer the masses.....

i don't mean to say that NOBODY has heard of VH over there-i have a couple friends from germany who are into them- but most people over there don't appreciate them they we do here...

i get the feeling it is like how iron maiden is in the UK vs. the US- but the opposite- alot of people liked them over here- especially in their hayday- but when they reunited with bruce dickinson a couple years ago- most rock fans in the US cared less (even though their reunion cd was AWESOME, imo...) i went to a show and less the half the lawn was full- and lots of empty seats in the pavilion- very sad- i think iron maiden is much bigger in parts of europe...

i believe i heard a radio interview w. EVH regarding this issue. when the interviewer asked Ed what was the deal with VH opening for Bon Jovi, Ed almost defensively said, "look, we did a show with Bon Jovi, they happened to go on after us. i never considered it one band opening and one band headlining". almost as if he had been approached on this subject more times than he cared to respond and didn't appreciate being considered the opening act for Bon Jovi.

I saw something on Mtv last night about 2 hit wonders(they even talked about Extreme and VH thing) but just from watching that and reading and seeing other stuff, Europe has different perspective on music than the USA

Those shows took place in Stadiums all over Europe - alternating headliners would've been ridiculous, bon jovi are in a different league popularity-wise over here.

Didn't van hagr open for a bon jovi show in '87? - I've seen posters of this on ebay - it was a special one-off charity thing - but having them go on before a 3 album copy-cat band is ludicrous, and I can't believe it happened. Would never have happened had Roth stayed.

I think if Roth did stay in '85, VH would've went on to conquer the World, not just America - and it would have started with an appearance at Live Aid.

Actually the great Van Halen opened for more than 2 shows. I read an interview with Alex and he was real angry about this shit, he said "I think it`s ridiculus for a band like Van Halen to open for a band like Bon Jovi, because i think that VH is simply a better band. I didn`t want that to happen, but that`s just my opinion not the band`s." I remeber that line well and always wondered why this hasn`t been discussed before, cause i think that shows the tensions that begin to grow in the band when Ray Danniels came along.
They opened the whole european leg except the Paris gig.And i know that because I`m from Germany. And no, nowadays David Hasselhoff isn`t huge at all ( ok, i must confess that he really was 10 years ago )and a even bigger no to you hain: we got some real beauties, and most are not only shaved under their arms
Ah, i went off topic!
I must say that even if thinlineokc thinks that it`s no big issue that VH opened those shows, i must say that I am pissed to this day, cause i payed alot of bucks to see some other bands and VH only for about 55 minutes.
Same thing happened in `98 by the way.
They really have to work on their european puplicity, if they ever come out of their holes.

Sorry for the long read

> the girls don't shave their underarms and the food sucks

that's quite funny

but didn't classic van halen also open for the rolling stones?

about bon jovi: yes, that's quite sad, i guess most of the van halen fans left b4 bonjovi started.

cheers,

SToRM

Sure they did, as seen on the back cover of the diver down record. That picture was shot at the Tangerine Bowl in 1981.
Our food sucks? Schweinsbraten and Semmelködel? Can`t believe that.
