Default When did you first here Joe Satriani?

I started listening to Satriani's solo stuff in '90.
I remember it clearly...A spring break pilgrimage to Daytona with a couple of buds in a Honda Civic Hatchback..with the back seat folded down to make room for a gigantic speaker box (playing GOOD music, not of that rap-crap).
There was only 2 seats up front and room in the hatch for the 3rd lying down (our sleeping position)..made for a long 24hr straight drive.
It was my turn in the hatch to catch a few Zzz, when I was awakened by the insane heavy Guitar riffs off of "Big Bad Moon" (Flying in a Blue Dream).
Always being an EVH fan, I started digging into the discography of this newly discovered (in my ears anyway) virtuoso. I now have most of his CDs, and of course was excited to hear he would be joining an actual "band" (Chickenfoot)..I always thought he would excel in that environment.

Just wondering when others discovered him...was it with Chickenfoot, or were you fortunate enough to have his CDs in your collection much earlier.
Finally trying to pick up guitar after too many years.
    Chickenfoot Rocks.

Chickenfoot. I was just getting into music and Van Halen when I heard about Sammy and Mike forming this new band. I checked it out and I was amazed by the guitar playing, which obviously turned out to be Satch.

Surfing With The Alien. I collected comic books back then, and actually the album cover caught my eye first and made me buy it. I had no idea it would be an instrumental album at all. Also got Flying In A Blue Dream when it was released, and the Extremist... which also included a great show at the plush and regal Palace Theater in Cleveland, never heard guitar sound so good in such a great setting. Lost interest after that and dedicated my life to the stylings of the great Kurt Cobain.

    Not of This Earth. 1986.

I picked up the CD because I had never heard Joe's stuff. I read a little about him but never heard his stuff. I was really impressed that Joe did played electric guitar, keyboard, percussion, bass guitar and produced the album.

I love the NOTE CD, still a great listen to this day.

I was at a record store in beautiful downtown San Bruno CA, I believe it was The Wherehouse? (anyone remember record stores?)......and they were playing 'Surfing With The Alien' over their house system.....and I asked the much-cooler-than-me-record-store-dude what they were playing and he told me it was some "show-off shredder"......I bought it and completly wore it out over the next 6 months.....

Not of his Earth. What a great album that was. Also if you guys remember Satch had one of those thin plastic records released in Guitar Player (or was it Guitar for the Practicing Musician). It was him running scales on one hand and sounded amazing. I still have that record where you have to place a penny on the center so it doesn't slip.

Saw Satch in the late 80's at Lamour Far East in Commack, Long Island. The GA crowd was pushing towards him like he was a god. He played like a god that night... I imagined it was sort of like what it would be to have seen Jimi. He had to continually stop the show as people were getting crushed at the stage. Amazing stuff....

Oh yeah... he had hair back then... long 80's rocker hair.

Heard Satch Boogie on the radio, mid solo, and I remember hoping it was new Van Halen!

Saw the Flying in a Blue Dream tour at the Fox in ATL. That was an amazing show.

The first time I heard Satriani , it was on radio with the song "Ice nine"
I said "dam sounds very good? who is it? sure it's a great player... perhaps Satriani? ... the DJ said Joe Satriani! Then I bought the LP LIVE : Dreaming#11

Surfing with the Alien and then picked up Blue Dream when it came out.

I am not too big into instrumentals, so I lost interest after that until CF.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Not of This Earth. Was into Vai already and was interested in hearing his "teacher". I dug it at the time. Still think it's better than Surfing, when he got
a ton more money behind him.

Similarly lost interest after Blue Dream. Always thought he was a guy essentially playing instrumental arrangements of what should've been rock band material.
The biggest reason I'm so glad he's in a good band now.
