Default SAMMY HAGAR: 'III' Is 'The Best Record I've Made In 100 Years'

Bryan Reesman of The Aquarian Weekly recently conducted an interview with CHICKENFOOT, the supergroup featuring frontman Sammy Hagar, bassist Michael Anthony, guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Chad Smith. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the band's sophomore album, "Chickenfoot III":

Anthony: "Obviously, having been in the studio on the first album and been on tour, everybody's really comfortable musically with each other now, and I think with this album we carved out a CHICKENFOOT sound. I think we're more evolved and not just jamming anymore."

Hagar: "It was just difficult getting it altogether again because Chad was ready go back to the [RED HOT CHILI] PEPPERS, and I just finished my book and was ready to go out on a book tour. There was too much on my plate, and I didn't feel like going in, as much as I love the band."

"I think it's the best record I've made in 100 years. I can't tell you any record in my life that's better from my standpoint — my singing, my lyrics, melodies, what I put into Joe's music. I don't think I ever did as good a job on any VAN HALEN record."

On CHICKENFOOT's manager John Carter — also Hagar's longtime manager, musical collaborator and personal friend — who passed away during the making of "Chickenfoot III":

Hagar: "He was a dear friend, and he was my bouncing board, man. He's the guy that I called up and asked, 'What do you think about this lyric?' 'Eh, it sucks.' He was the only guy that really would push me and crack the whip on me. When I would say, 'Fuck you, this is good enough,' he would go, 'No, it ain't.'"

Satriani: "He was just such an amazing guy, and really funny, and not for a second would he take anybody getting maudlin about anything. He was an ass-kicker, and that's what he was doing on his deathbed. He would hear a demo and call up and say, 'That sucks, you guys got to write a better song. Why don't you try one of my ideas?' He was being Carter, and we loved him for it. But we all kept a stiff upper lip."

Hagar: "I think he actually fucked me up, because he knew he was dying. I didn't know he was dying — we all had our heads in the sand — but he was saying, 'If this is the last record you ever make…' Everything he was saying to me was kind of about himself, and I was getting all pissy with him. Then when we found out he was really sick and was going to die, I got self-motivated and went, 'I have to write the best lyrics I ever wrote, and I don't have my buddy here to tell me if they're great or not. I have to be my own judge.' That's when I really got motivated and inspired for 'Up Next' and 'Something Going Wrong'."
"I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and I´ve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

WOLFGANG did the IMPOSSIBLE, he brought back VAN HALEN, DEAL WITH IT.

SAMMY HAGAR Offers To Manage Reunited Classic Lineup Of GUNS N' ROSES - Oct. 26, 2011

During a recent interview with Attention Deficit Delirium, legendary rocker Sammy Hagar (VAN HALEN, CHICKENFOOT) offered his thoughts on a reunion of the classic lineup of GUNS N' ROSES. "They've proved it again and again and again that it ain't [about] the money," observed Hagar. "They just don't get along because Axl [Rose, vocals] goes out for a lot less money with his version of GUNS N' ROSES, and Slash goes out for a lot less money with VELVET REVOLVER or by himself. The amount of money they could make if they got it all back together, made a great record and toured the world would probably be as much as THE ROLLING STONES [get], and for them not to do it, it obviously ain't about the money. Because they could do it. I would manage them. I'd be their manager and make sure they got the right deal from all the promoters. They could be the biggest band in the world if they wanted to."

To me, CF is kind of like Montrose only somewhat a better "band". Whereas with Van Halen he was on a much higher plateau. CF III is only better (as a whole) than OU812 but OU812 had some better songs though. It is NOT better than 5150, FUCK and Balance.

Default Sammy Hagar: Joe Satriani 'Is The Best Guitarist I Have Ever Played With'

    http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/bla...sitemID=119229

Sammy Hagar: Joe Satriani 'Is The Best Guitarist I Have Ever Played With'

Neil Baron of Reno Gazette-Journal reports: Longtime rock 'n' roll frontman Sammy Hagar knows a great guitarist when he hears one. After all, the Red Rocker has shared the stage with the likes of Ronnie Montrose, Ted Nugent and Eddie Van Halen.

So you know Hagar knows what he's talking about when he compliments guitarist Joe Satriani, one of his collaborators in a new band, CHICKENFOOT. While Hagar and his regular band, THE WABOS, will play Friday and Saturday at Harrah's Lake Tahoe, he's moving on to a new group — in this case, with a guitarist he has long admired.

"I've made this statement a million times — some people don't like it, some people do — but Joe is the best guitarist I have ever played with," Hagar said during a recent phone interview. "That's a strong statement. I realize that. You've got to give Eddie (Van Halen) a lot of love for his innovation of what he did as a stylist with the guitar," Hagar added. "He broke a lot of ground. But Joe is a master. He can play anything and everything — folk, blues, jazz, hard rock, soft rock, fusion, you name it. As a guitar technician, Joe is the best guy I've ever stood in the same room with on any instrument. And he's so soulful when he solos. He puts more feeling into a solo than any other player I've been with."

Don`t know if this should have been placed in the Mike or Hagar individual forums or even into the non Van Halen forum but in the June edition of Guitar Player mag. (See Slash on the cover and the Satch interview on page 16) Satriani, Hagar, MA and Chad Smith from the Chili`s have been recording. Satch claims to have about an album`s worth in the can. Power trio with a singer style. (whodathunk that would work) I knew it wouldn`t take long for somthing cool like this to occur. Like chocolate and peanut butter or titties and beer some things just make sense. Unless you like say.. peanut butter and beer. In which case I have no idea of what to say so Chef feel free to throw out the bunny with the pancake cover. At any rate, Mods feel free to move this if the logic is errant.

I still feel like there is a missing element in the current carnival of shame and until things improve I suppose the back catalogue is the only option for me. Still it is nice to see that some new and interesting things seem to be on the horizon. I will spend my cash on some new super group swag if and when it sees the light of day. Incidentally, I am hoping to hear the planet us stuff if anyone has links or such. I heard good things about "Vertigo" But never got the change to hear it.

Peace, love and Crabs(the blue variety)
