Default Obscure Van Halen reference in Bill Simmons' latest column

In his latest column, Bill Simmons breaks down all the QB's in the NFL. Check out what he says about Rex Grossman and John Beck:

    "35. Rex Grossman
    36. John Beck
Redskins fans arguing about Beck and Grossman is like Van Halen fans arguing about Mitch Malloy and Gary Cherone."

Apparently Sports Guy is a big Van Halen fan, who the hell else knows about Mitch Malloy other than diehards?

"You gotta do me a favor and let these (people) have a good time, alright? A little bit of (vulgar term for breast) and their hands in the air ain't gonna hurt anybody" - Nikki Sixx

"Van Halen is 'Get the fuck off the sidewalk if ya don't like our drivin' kinda music!" - David Lee Roth

"We get to the hotel, there's people partyin' in the parking lot, people gettin' down in the elevator, wow! I swear to God I had this one chick, this chick was poundin' on my door, she was kickin' and screamin' at my door 'til about 6:30 this morning. Finally, I just said, 'Fuck it!' and let her out of my room!" - David Lee Roth

That's a pretty funny line. But yeah… I'm sure also pretty obscure to most.

I'm surprised that Celtics dickhead took time away from jerking off to his Larry Bird poster to listen to Van Halen.

Bill Simmons is THE man when it comes to Basketball. You will not find another person who knows as much about Basketball as he does. Well, maybe Bob Ryan but he's also another Bostonian. Brett, I LOVE the Celtics and while most hate your Lakers, I actually have always liked and admired them. I loved Showtime, their players, and their coach. I knew that every year, they would be facing my C's and it was a GREAT rivalry. I also have the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry going here as well but I've never liked the Yanks. Not so with basketball.

That being said, it does not surprise me that Simmons is a Van Halen fan. He's in my age bracket and grew up here in Massachusetts, just like I did. I can tell you without a doubt that Van Halen was the biggest, most popular band in this area at that time. In fact, my graduating class voted them "Best Band" in our 1987 yearbook. I can say that without a doubt, NOBODY did it like Van Halen for as long as they did. Sure, there were a few "flash in the pans" that had a few good years (Scorpions, Night Ranger, Journey, etc...) but nobody did it like VH. Another New England native that is also a big fan is Adam Sandler (and it's not just the VH reference in the movie "The Wedding Singer". He truly is a fan.

It's amazing how a band that originated 3,000 miles from where I live, can make a big impact like they did.

Bill is fantastic - really gifted writer and he knows his hoops. There's a few really good nba writers (BS, Adrian Wojnarowski, etc) - it's too bad that for every one great one there seems to 100 horrible ones. And ESPN seems to hire all the crappy ones.

If you also have a Tom Brady jersey on, you see God! Least that's what I heard...
