Default Family budget; How to go broke on 100,000k per year...

One of the challenges during this economic crisis is budgeting. As much as we hear about the housing collapse or the stock market seesawing like a playground, we rarely get a glimpse into the actual budget of real live Americans. Sure we know housing is expensive. We all intuitively knew that $147 a barrel oil was not going to be good on our economy. But how does this translate into the monthly budget of a family trying to get by?

since my wife has gone on mat leave, we're living off about 100K a year and it's not easy. Some people look at that amount of money as being rich but it's not anymore. Not when that's a family income. Hell, if I was single on my salary I'd be very well off. With 3 kids, it's not nearly the same thing.

While I guess it's all relative to individual situations, try making ends meet around an annual 34K (BEFORE taxes)...for TWO (actually THREE, if you count my boy). I'm really not trying to complain, as I'm fairly well-to-do for this part of the world...but...

    God bless us all.

everything is relative indeed. My mortgage and property insurance alone is more than 21 k per year (and i live in a little semi detached in the burbs).

I hear ya and sorry about the edit. I was never much of a math fiend.

And on that note, it's amazing how much we all shell out every year for 'peace of mind' (insurance), which, at one time, considered a luxury, has now become a necessity or MANDATORY to merely EXIST.

Indeed, car and house insurance alone runs me about 5 grand a year. Plus there life insurance, disability insurance, etc. Life was so much cheaper pre kids.

Real estate is expensive as all hell where I live, still.

You aren't buying a single family home for less than 600K here unless you want a two hour commute each way.

In my area, as a family, you need to make in excess of 200K a year if you want to get ahead.

But it is all relative. A man making 250K living in Manhattan is barely eating, but the same income in Back Creek Kentucky is living like a king.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Man, I must be doing something wrong. I barely make 50k and I'm so underwater. I have no car payment, no "entertainment" section in my budget, and I'm sinking fast. Maybe it has to do with 2 people are living with me rent free and eat my food.

And Insurance, don't get me started. It was a nice idea back in the day, but now it's a ripoff.

The only way insurance would really work is if every insurance company was non-profit.

It's all relative where you live. $100k in Nebraska goes a lot farther than it does here in So Cal.

    true.....a 350,000 home here is a waterfront mcmansion......or a nice sized farm

I think that couples should live on one of their salaries and put the rest away...down size your life to fit that salary and you'll never be in trouble if you lose one to layoffs death or divorce

but that's easier said than done.

but being a single person in this economy is a bitch...one salary to pay the mortgage and property taxes, one salary to invest for retirement, and insurance?...can't rely on the spouses employer for that

Hey! Leave me outta this discussion, Mr. Emperor.

...and, for the record, there are a LOT of perks when you're in the bar business...but, at least here in Lincoln, a $100k salary is NOT one of them...

I'm in about the same salary range as sixstring. Being a single guy, with no kids, it's not that tough to get by. $100,000 a year around here is very good money.

If the US Government get their fingers out and give me permission to work and pay taxes, life will be a little less stressful thats for sure! Fingers crossed it won't be too much longer now that they have fingerprinted and photo-ed me to hell and back!

I make alot, but doesnt matter how much I make, I will spend that much... I am 47 and not changing at this point...

now that my daughter has a real job and I am single, alot of income back in my pocket... kind of catch 22 though, I am paying most her school loans lol.

I told my financial advisor, "you get excited when you make money, it means nothing to me until I can spend it."
