    Default "Spanked" live

On a few 91 shows "Spanked" had a great outro, where it was just Al and Mike groovin' and it was a real cool beat, then it went into "Runaround". I've always thought this would've been cool on "Right here right now", but ofcourse never made it.
On the shoreline amphithatre 91 show, its amazing. You never expect it coming. They just add it on at the end, a real cool jam thing.
"Spanked" is a cool live gem.

"Spanked" is one of my all-time favourite tracks by VH in any case, live or not. I know it's not well-loved round these parts but I honestly think it's a superb track. I particularly love the build-up to the chorus, where you've got Mikey going "Ooh ooh ooh" in the background. And, guess what, I also really like the lyrics - they're both funny and accurate!

Maybe in my top five least favorite Van Halen songs, and that includes VHIII.

Glad you guys like it, but man, I can't stand it, never have.

I like the intro, but that is about it.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

For me at least, that is why. I don't listen to VH for lyrical content, but if I feel like an idiot singing the lyrics out loud, I push the skip button.

Lol, I guess I should have specified musically. I totally understand the hate Spanked's lyrics get. But I still have always wondered why nobody seems to like In 'N Out.

Dreidel, is that really the lyric?

If it is, then, WOW! For 20 years, I've thought it was, "are you ready for it?"

If it is, "bad, bad boys", then, yeah, that makes a big difference. Ugh.

I don't mind In 'N Out, just not a favorite. FUCK as a whole is not a favorite of mine. I much prefer 5150 and Balance, and even OU812 out of the Sammy portion of the catalog.

Haha!!! I LOVE singing the lyrics outloud - I think they're totally great!

    Both feet up, watching TV
I saw a place to feast my eyes - whooah
I've always tripped on commercials - yeeaaahh
    This one blew my mind...ohhhh

Tell me who you gonna call
    When you need that affection
You got to have it quick
    Just lean your love line
    In her direction
    Whoooaaaahhh

    All you bad bad boys
Call her up on the spanked line
    (Repeat)

    3 dollars first minute
    After that costs you 4
    A series of negotiations mmmm
Then you call back for more

    Now who you gonna call
When you need that special, (special)
    Little something
You can say what you like
    It's all confidential
    Whoooaaahhhooooaahh

    All you bad bad boys
Call her up on the spanked line
    (Repeat)

    All you bad bad boys
    All you bad bad boys
Call her up on the spanked line
    (Repeat)

Just call her up, call her up

Maybe it's cos I'm a girl but I have NO problems belting them out like there's no tomorrow!

I never minded Spanked either really...I always thought the music was real cool. The six string Danny bass was something kinda left field, and the Ebow (or Sustainer whichever he used for the tune) intro sounded cool too. I guess the lyrics are a bit too campy or cheezy for some but hey....Sam was kinda in that mode at the time, and honestly I always paid more attention to what Ed, Al an Mike did over everything else....The actual lyrics can be more like the window dressing anyhow.....In N' Out on the other hand.....I actually like it live better than on the album. For some reason on disc, to me it sounds like more of an over rehearsed session band doing just another hard pop-ish blues number that was popular to do at the time......Just not that typical spontaneous VH magic. Same goes for Man On a Mission. Sam's vocal performance on the tune was spot on....Heard he did it in one take, but overall, I liked it better when they played it live back in the day. Much more energy, and a lot more raw.

Add me to the list of people who never knew it was "all you bad, bad boys". I though it was "are you ready boys".

In 'n Out gets better with age for me as I went from a college freshman to supporting a family on one salary:

It does, but you also have to consider the time it was written in. I know saying that makes it sound like eons ago, but seriously......Around the early 90's, if you watched TV past 11:00pm, you were subjected to all these phone sex line ads...Usually at least two of these stupid things every commercial break. Yeah.....Delicious looking girls were always shot soft focus, gyrating seductively, oft biting their their lip, while gazing into the camera lens...almost as if she were looking into the viewers very soul........She'd tease you, licking a pearl of her necklace from around her neck with the very tip of her tongue... A delicate lace negligee barely clinging to their heaving breasts....as the camera would pan lower.....and lower down, before, uhhhhhhhhh.......
Yeah, I fuckin' hated that song too!!!!!

    Spanked is one of them.
Actually, Spanked is about censorship. I've seen an interview on youtube where Eddie is explaining the forthcoming Balance album and how it was going to be more literal. He explained that they tried to write subtly on FUCK but that people didn't get it. The point of the song is that anybody can call the sex lines, they have no way to know how old you are, yet they say you must be 18...censorship is bullshit and so on. It went over my head too. When you listen to a band like VH, you are not really expecting any subversive meaning to the songs, since they have this sex, drugs, and rock n roll thing.

But honestly, I think Sammy can write some meaningful or deep lyrics when he wants to. Look at Future is the Past, or even Learning to See from the dreaded 2004 songs. I think he has some gems there, "night after night, watching the sky turn, but never felt the earth spinning around". How great is that? and very easy to miss...talking about how the stars appear to rotate in the night sky, when it is really the earth that is rotating, and how in life, we similarly miss what is really happening. Great shit.

I think I listened to this song once: the day the album came out. No desire to do so again.

I always liked Man on a Mission and In and Out- they really jam/rocked these out live.
Wolfie is not Mike, but he's more than ok.
Mike is gone, but not forgotten. They played some amazing shows from 2007-2015; some people are in denial about it.

    Leave me alone.....

But yes -- I always thought the music was way cool. The lyrics? Meh. Silly, but it's a rock band.
Sings like a bird. Rocks like a pig.
