Default The dining tax: San Francisco restaurants want standard 25% tip

It's a question regularly asked by baffled diners all over the world: 'How much should I tip'?

Many countries have wide variations for a standard tip, often leaving even the most experienced of travellers confused.

However, restaurant workers in San Francisco, California, may be about to help by implementing a standard tip onto the bill.

The only problem is that - whether your service is good or bad - it would be a whopping 25 per cent.

The Contra Costa Times newspaper claims the proposals already have support from some high-class restaurants.

It is thought that people on average tip somewhere between 15 and 20 per cent.

The plans for a standard tip in San Francisco, however, have not gone down well with those living nearby.

Mike Alexander, from Antioch, told the Contra Costa Times: 'They have to be kidding.

'The whole purpose of a tip is to reward service. If the price is dictated it's not a tip.

'If they're serious they'll meet a lot of resistance. It seems like everyone is trying to squeeze another buck out of us.'

Martha Haider, from Brentwood, also told the newspaper: 'I don't mind tipping for good service, but 25 per cent is going too far,' she said.

'There might be some well-heeled people who will do it, but not me.'
"Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack. -- Gen. George S. Patton

This is a bunch of crap!!

People should be able to tip what they want. It all depends on the service you get. Why should someone get sub-standard service yet have to tip them more than what they deserve.

This is stupid. You should tip what you want based on how the service was. Although, I have first hand knowledge (down here in New Orleans) that certian groups don't understand that you are supposed to tip for good service or they are so stupid they just don't know at all. This has been a huge issue in the service industry down here for years. We have many festivals down here, but if you ask service workers how they do during Essence and the Bayou Classic, many will tell the truth, they get stiffed regularly, way out of proportion to the normal once in awhile asshole patron. So in these instances, it would probably be appropriate.

Now for the thin skinned, don't get mad at the messanger, just ask any servive industry worker, if they are honest they will tell you exactly what I have.

0% chance I would dine in any restaurant with a standard tip built into the price.

I'm ok with resturants adding a tip for large parties (that's pretty standard up here) but 25% is insanity.

I wish the concept of tipping would be abolished altogether - just pay workers a fair wage from the get-go and price accordingly.

I agree, nothing worse than feeling guilty about choosing their establishment to spend your hard earned only to see that smirk of a disappointed server. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't "extraordinary service" fair to expect since I am gracing your establishment in the first place? Fuck the person who came up with tips.

when resteraunts do that to me, thats all they get... I would generally tip more than what they force on it... but thats what they get for putting it on there, I am not going to add more...

They would get a better tip from me if they do NOT do this.... and I have met alot of waiters that refuse to add the automatic tip, because they know they will get more without it.

just a pet peeve of mine, I should get to tip what I think they deserve, regardless of party size or any other factor.

No disrespect to the fine citizens of California who frequent this board but what the fuck is up with your state? I mean every whacked out idea seems to originate from the state. Hey don't get me wrong I am ok with medical mary jane and I don't have an issue with Mary marrying Jane. Those seem normal to me. However there seems to be a lot of screwed up stuff going on over there.

    This is one of them.

This. I hate tipping. I do it anyway because of societies guilt trip that is put on to customers for not. I hear stupid remarks, like saying, "If you can't afford to tip, don't eat out". Really? I work HARD for my money too and don't have anyone subsidizing my income. I would gladly pay more for a meal so a worker can get a better wage. When you have restaraunt owners putting mandatory tip into the bill, what they are essentially saying is that "we pay our workers like crap and want YOU the customer to make it up to them". Tipping is fine when you feel like you want to show appreciation but it has gotten to the point of brain-washing that you MUST do it because it's "tradition" and was put forth by God himself.

A bigger problem is that servers get taxed on their tips, so if you stiff them, they get taxed on "income" they never got.

I have friends that used to serve and did for years, and they said that they would get a choice if they wanted to add gratuity for a big party. Sometimes they felt like they would get stiffed so they added, sometimes they had the feeling they'd get more, so they didn't add it and they ended up with more.

On the other hand, I had a friend who never got caught, but would write in gratuity on the bill, add it to the total, and circle a new total. He said people always paid it.

This is just dumb. Eating at these places is about to get 10% more expensive. How stupid.
