    Default Stoptail Peavey Wolf STD

I bought a Peavey Wolfgang stoptail standard a while ago.

To me it sounds very thin with almost no bass, almost like a strat, in all three switch positions. It is wire correctly and pots are good, etc.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Could it be the pups are shot, cause it sounds nothing like my other Wolfgangs?

I've never played a stoptail but I have played all basswood vs. maple top side by side and I will say, the maple tops are definitely warmer... Also, strings will change tone as well... I played sixstring's maple top with 9's vs. my maple top with 10's and there was a big difference also... I would guess the stoptail would also have something to do with it... Look at consistencies vs. differences between your Wolfgangs in every detail... If all else is constant (same), it has to be the stoptail...

My 1st guess would be either a dying tone/volume pot, Dry solder joint, bad earth or a bad tone cap. Swap em all out to be sure.

I've got one and I get an awesome tone from it.

As Tommy5150 said, check the solder joints.

I take it that it sounded good when you first got it???

Actually, it pretty much sounded like this from day one. I had the volume pot replaced already. I'll check the tone pot and cap.

Having owned 24 Peavey Wolfs, I can tell you they will vary from one to the next. I've had some pickups sound quieter than others; it could be a difference in they way they were wound or some variance in the quality of the pots (both are common issues). I've never had a Wolf deliver what I would describe as "thin" or "weak" tone. In fact, the hard tail Wolfs tend to offer even more robust tone, as there's generally more sustain and resonance.

There is something wrong with either the wiring, the pickup itself, or....no offense.....your concept of tone.

There is no part of a Wolfgang that sounds like a single coil guitar, in spite of it's increased clean treble over the EBMM. Period.

It lacks the thick, muddy mids of the EBMM, for certain, but that's not a bad thing in some people's minds, depending on the amp they play through, and for certain, it doesn't sound like a single coil pickup equipped guitar. End of story.

Keep the guitar, and get it fixed. Not trying to sound like a douche. Just trying to reassure you that you've made the right purchase, but that something needs some tweaking. I know you will love the guitar once this is done.

Something is very, very wrong here.

Considering the old saying no two guitars sound the same does not apply to the context of your description. Yes there will be subtle differences as in a keeper or a dog, but you are describing a huge change in tone, and no Standard Wolfgang sounds like single coils. Have a tech check out the pups with a meter before swapping out the pots just to make sure. I personally believe it is the pots or loose solder joint somewhere. Why I say the pups should be fine is because you say the guitar is weak in all positions, and it would be very rare to have both pups shot at the same time.I had bought a new Strat years ago where the bridge pup just died after about 18 months, so shit happens. But the odds of both is virtually nill. I have a few Stop tail Wolfs and they are a bit warmer than those with a Floyd as Andrew stated.Good luck as it should be something minor.

I've run into something that sounds similar to what you are describing a few times, but usually it's just one pickup, but then there's always a first time.
I really need to post some videos showing some of the stuff I've come across opening up guitars.

I'm sure you've investigated this, but it really sounds like the pickups or at least the wiring have been messed with.
To you and me, modding a Wolf's pickups seems just wrong, but some folks like to add their own "mods" to the equasion. First and foremost, look at the backs and see that they are in fact original. If so, is there any evidence that they have been opened up at some point? Screwhead damage? Like the coil tape out of place, tucked under the plate flange, or looks lifted? Are there any sloppy solder joints in the back?
As the guys said, a stop tail Wolf should have a more robust tone if anything. If you've changed the pot and it still sounds thin, then I'd say there is something not right with the pickups, which in itself seems weird. I doubt the switch would cause this. Usually a bad switch is just scratchy at best, or cuts out completely. If it's the pickups, I can understand one not being good, but to have both is pretty rare unless someone deliberately opened them up for some purpose, like a phase mod, a coil tap, magnet swap, or maybe a simple re-pot going wrong.
If they sound like a single coil by definition....are you getting a lot of hum like an SC as well? If so, then a coil wire could be severed. Simple way to tell ( I'm sure you know, but many don't surprisingly) is with the guitar plugged in, tap a pole on each coil with a screwdriver to see if you get a loud "click". If you do, then it's somewhere else in the chain. If only one coil functions, then you need to inspect for a deliberately snipped lead or worst case, a broken coil wire somewhere around where the ends are directed off the bobbin. This is where they typically break if the pickup is not opened up properly and handled carefully.
Then if you do find the break, you have to fix it by unwinding it one pass and re-soldering it to the connection wire, but it takes magnification, proper tools and a steady hand...but it's not impossible.
