Default Half a Million for Michelle Obama's Africa Trip

How much does it cost taxpayers to fly First Lady Michelle Obama, her two daughters and her mother, a niece and a nephew, a hairstylist and makeup artists to South Africa and Botswana to give a few speeches, meet Nelson Mandela, and enjoy a safari on a private game preserve?

Nearly half a million dollars, according to documents obtained by Judicial Watch via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) concerning Obama's June 21-27 journey.

Judicial Watch said the U.S. Air Force provided a C-32 - a Boeing 757 modified by the military for the purpose of flying big-wigs around the world - to fly the First Lady and her entourage to and from Africa, at a cost of $424,142. Another $928.44 was listed as the cost of providing 192 meals for the 21 people who made the trip

    By Jake Tapper, ABC News

“The number stated is misconstrued and out of context,” says a senior White House official. “The hourly rate is not the marginal cost of operating the plane — it is an accounting figure that prices in a number of fixed costs from maintaining the Air Force fleet for this kind of plane over a year. For example, it includes estimated replacement parts, depreciation, repairs, and costs that would have been incurred regardless of this flight.”

Judicial Watch says that Sasha and Malia Obama are listed as “Senior Staff.”

Not true, says the White House.

“The Obama daughters were not listed as Senior Staff – that only designates the area of the plane where they were seated,” says the official. “The Air Force categorizes the passengers by compartment on the plane.”

Sounds like a lot for nothing, but I'm pretty sure previous presidents' families took trips on the American dime, too.

Sure, it is peanuts and other president's wasted money too, BUT (last 2 Posters) this guy went out of his way to claim a new era, Hope N Change, things will be different. He set the bar way too high and no surprise, he has failed in many areas. These things would not be such an issue, except for the fact that he vowed to be different.

I'm no fan of his administration, but I'd have to see how his expenditures in this area compare to prior administrations - if he's still spent significantly lower amounts than his predecessors, then he's kept his promise. Can't expect them to stay walled up in the White House 24/7/365.

Presidential vacations: How does Obama compare?

Following his three-day bus tour to promote his economic agenda -- and not to mention the debt limit rancor in Washington before that -- President Obama is finally getting some rest and relaxation.

On Thursday, he and his family are heading off to Martha's Vineyard, the island off of Massachusetts. They'll be staying at a 28-acre retreat called Blue Heron Farm for about 10 days.

Raw Video: Obama's Martha's Vinyard retreat

There has been criticism of the president's vacation at this time. But how does the number of vacation days the president has spent compare to his predecessors? CBS Radio's Mark Knoller has kept track of presidential vacations for years and supplied the data.

So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office. At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his ranch where his staff often joined him for meetings. And Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch.

Among recent presidents, Bill Clinton took the least time off -- 28 days.

To be fair, a presidential vacation away from the White House is not the same as a vacation for the average person. The president is still in contact with his advisers and on call for any emergency

I don't care how many days he takes off (up to a point) - it's how many of our tax dollars are spent entertaining himself (and others) on those days off that counts.

I understand that presidents before Obama have made trips which cost us taxpayers money. However everybody outside of FDR has not had a recession that has lasted three years. They have not seen the deficits that Obama has staring him in the face every day. They have not been critical of previous administrations of wasting taxpayer money.

It's time for somebody to finally say "enough is enough." I don't think the excuse of building business relations with African countries is viable. I am sure there are 100 other countries with larger GDP than what was visited if it was purely business.

I don't think the position of first lady should entitle you to free vacations. Not for Michelle Obama or first ladies/men in 2012, 2016,2020, 2024, etc

I don't give a rats ass about presidential vacations cause they are working. They still don't sleep and are plenty stressed out.

Oh yeah just because Bush did it doesn't make it right for Obama. Had to throw that in there. Bush fuck ups doesn't allow Obama to fuck up

The White House must have known this was coming, hence the Target Photo Op last week...

I don't recall him saying this "new era" or "change" included travel expenses. I can understand your disappointment with our dear leader with regard to certain issues, but the cost of travel for members of his family and/or gov't employees? Surely there's more pressing things with which to call him out on, no?
