    Default Your favorite modern bands

Didn't see a thread like this, so I thought it might be interesting to discuss some newer bands we like listening to. I guess my idea of a modern band is a group that made it big since about '98 or 2000. Here's my top 5:

    1) Halestorm
    2) Chickenfoot
    3) Airbourne
    4) Velvet Revolver
    5) Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

I also dig Avenged Sevenfold, Black Country Communion, and Black Stone Cherry. I wanna say System of a Down too cause I really like the music, but I can't stand Serj Tankian's lyrics.

Never occurred to me to think of Chickenfoot as a "new" band based on the track record of its individual members.

Besides them, the last new band to really get my attention was Cage The Elephant.

The only really *modern* band that I am regularly listening to is Earl Greyhound. They've got two albums out so far. Songs - and the members themselves (just check out pics of the band) - have a great 70's vibe to it, but with a modern touch.

I guess Hurtsmile (the side project of Gary Cherone with his brother) counts as a modern-day band, as well.

All other stuff I listen to are bands that have been a round for some time or are back again, such as Extreme or Europe. The Last Look at Eden album is my all-time favorite Europe album. Like Extreme with "More Than Words", Europe is by far more than "Final Countdown" or "Carrie".

"Modern" is kind of subjective, right? I mean, does that mean "in their prime" or "new within the last few years" or "2000 and later" or what?

The first band that came to mind, though, was Muse, hands-down.

That's just a few on my IPod.

Unless you are counting the picking hand as one, you really only need one fretting finger to play a LOT of modern hard rock.

I mean, DLR could be the lead guitarist in some of these bands.

I too like some of the songs, so I don't want to come across as harsh, hell, maybe I am just jealous that they are doing it and I'm not.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Shinedown for me as well. I don't know about the guitar tuning and all that, but the music is great, especially on The Sound of Madness CD.

And, I've noticed the back tracks at the live show, but I wasn't bothered too much by them...surprisingly.

I should probably clarify that when I said "made it big", I meant that in reference to the fact that there are some acts that are popular today that got started in the early 90's. Lesser known bands are much appreciated here too.

Some great groups listed here. I found this band called Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown on iTunes last night and I'm liking their music alot.

Well, these are the bands that I can think of right now:

    Queens of the Stone Age
    Wolfmother
    Airbourne
    Black Spiders
    Velvet Revolver
    The Darkness

(and some bands consisting of people, who've been around for some time and may not be considered "new":

    Black Country Communion
    Chickenfoot
    Them Crooked Vultures)
