Default Anyone see That Metal Show with Sammy

I just watched That Metal Show episode with Sammy. At the end they took a vote on who is the better guitarist Eddie or Joe. Sammy said Joe, all jokes aside (can't be in two bands at the same time). I wonder what Sammy's opinion would be if he was still in Van Halen, but was able to do the Chickenfoot as a side project, what would he say then? I wonder if he is just saying Joe,because of his relationship with Ed or if he truly thinks Joe is better.

I think he's saying Joe because he believes it. Joe is the more complete player.

Problem is those other two zipper heads on TMS turned it into a different discussion about who is your favorite or who had a bigger impact. Of course EVH wins that debate. But that wasn't the question.

Trunk and Sam had it right and I thought Sam justified his answer.

This will be a can of worms but, I think technically Joe is a better guitarist, but Eddie just had that something... I like Chickenfoot, but my biggest problem with them so far is the sort generic guitar playing especially in the rhythm parts. I never felt Eddies guitar playing was generic. He always had something interesting going on.

If Sammy was in a band with you, and the question said who's better "Ed or GRCITY", he'd answer GRCITY.

I saw the show, it was great. Sammy is one fun interview to listen to. One of TMS hosts also chose Joe as well. I think there is some truth to all you say, or at least the theories are plausible. But just going on recent activity and visibility, and Eddie's medical issues over the last several years, it is hard not to think that Joe is the better guitarist NOW. If you look at it from a historical perspective then that is a entirely different discussion.

Even though the Army clones bashed TMS. I thought it was a great interview. Sam is just cool, and seemingly totally happy. It is hard not to like the guy.

both great guitar players, but kinda apples and oranges from different eras.

there are alot of technically better guitar players, but none of them will know what its like
or understand electrifying a concert hall like Ed and early VH.
I would love to hear some great new stuff from ED, but for me, it will always be
about what he WAS.. not in a bad way, just my number one early influence.
but I can easily move on with or without it. plenty good stuff out there.

Joe wouldn't be Joe unless Ed was Ed first... Ed wins in a landslide...

    EDIT:

I can only imagine all the threads here about Ed vs. Vai if there was an internet in the 80's...

Sam's a salesman and will always say what he is doing is his best work, best songs, best whatever. Very similar to how Ed is when he's selling whatever gear he's selling right now.

Not sure why exactly but I'm pretty much done with TMS and the three stooges. The show just kinda bugs me last few times I've watched. The CF segment just sounds awkward and I haven't even wanted to look for it on the interwebz.

I'm not denying Sam can spew some heavy BS, just saying on the question of who is the more complete player his answer sounded pretty straight forward.
