Default Recording Gig Coming up-Need Advice on Fuzz Boxes

Hey guys. I know.....Fuzz boxes on a VH site are pretty sacrilegious, but here's the deal... The producer I'm working with is going for a real 60's sorta sound and he want's me to use my Marshall, but suggested using a fuzz to get a bit more of that vintage vibe. They had an old Boss distortion at the studio, an MXR, and a real old Electro Harmonix, but I just don't like what I'm hearing with those units exept the Boss actually, but then that wasn't what he liked, so I'm at kind of a crossroads here. I looked around on You Tube, and the Dallas Arbiter reissue Fuzz Face might be the ticket, but then I see the MXR 108 Fuzz, and this morning, a vid for the MXR 78. Problem is most of the vids are recorded with terrible cam mics.
Any of you use a classic sounding fuzz that will work with a typical mid 70's Marshall you could recommend I check out?

Sorry I'm not real swift in this area...The only padal I've used to get any sort of distortion before this is a Tube Screamer.

    Thanks.
    J
PS... I should mention the guitars chosen for the project are my 82 Strat, and a Gibson SG Special.

    Proguitarshop is fantastic for demos.

I don't listen to too many fuzz pedals, but I like the Big Muff Pi. Very Black Sabbath and Deep Purple-ish.

Fuzz is a whole world unto itself and I have had many over the years. The best or should I say some of my favorites include my circa 1973 traingle knob Ram's Head Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi...the vintage ones sound infinitely better and different than any of the reissues.

I heartily recommend D*A*M fuzzboxes...that guy is THE worldwide authority on fuzzboxes and he makes the most accurate replica of the best 60's fuzz that ever existed the Solasound Tonebender Professional MKII, which is the fuzz you hear on the last Yardbirds album and the first Led Zeppelin album. It is also the fuzz you hear on Donovan's psychedelic masterpiece "Hurdy Gurdy Man".

But, I have to say that these are not options for most players...they are really hard to get and expensive ($500 and up for a MKII from D*A*M and an original Big Muff Pi from the early 70s can go for over $1,000)...

Try the Dunlop Hendrix model Fuzzface...it is a great place to start your journey into fuzzboxes and it is relatively inexpensive and readily available...it might run you $150 or something like that...

I would highly recommend an Analogman Sunface, EHX Big Muff, or a plain old Dunlop Fuzzface. I like the Big Muff best as it has a lot of character to the tone and it sounds like FUZZ. There's quite a few versions out there, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The current USA built Muff Pi sounds a lot like the late 70s Muffs with a higher gain and more cutting tone compared to the earlier Rams Head. The Rams Head is the most musical and arguably has the best tone. BOYC makes a great clone of the Rams Head called the Large Beaver. For the money it's a terrific pedal.
The big question in fuzzes, is do you want a germanium or a silicon fuzz? Germaniums are more organic and warmer, while a silicon fuzz has more gain and a more biting tone. Germaniums can be better controlled by the guitars volume than a silicon fuzz. I like a Germanium fuzz better myself, but to each his own.
I hope this has helped a little. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah, the Fuzz Face intrigues me...Especially the D-A reissue because it supposedly uses the original type germanium 108 transistors compared to the other reissues which use a harsher sounding silicon transistor which is what I think I am not digging. I'm going to check out that MXR 108 Fuzz tonight which is actually the Fuzzface circuit with the germanium transistors but in a smaller pedalboard friendly case.
That ZVEX sound real good too Johnny....Never heard of those.
Gotta try to see if I could find a vendor here in town. Most of the shops here charge a fortune for the boutique type stuff....Probably like everywhere else too.

The ZVEX fuzz factory comes in 2 versions.
A boutique hand painted one and a cheaper regular silver one.
They are the same but one is just hand painted.
I have the silver one and i highly recommend trying it.
I find it very versatile and fun to play with.
The guitarist for Muse has one built into his guitar and messes with the knobs while he plays.
U can twist the knobs and it feeds back by itself and makes all kinds of cool sounds.

Here's a part of a song i used my Zvex on.

Check out the Fuzzy Boy Pedal. It is a bit pricey, but solid:
