Default The Ever Eccentric Reinhold Bogner's EVH Story

Just a little clip of Reinhold Bogner, founder of Bogner Amplification describing his meeting with Edward at 5150. Turns out he wasn't a fan of EVH's choice in guitar woods. (basswood) Lol! Still a lot of tonewood snobs out there, though his amps are killer.

He took it apart and sold it bit by bit? Wow.

Haha! The hat is bad enough, sure, but the pants ain't much better.
He's actually a pretty good guy, and doesn't look like a class "A" nutter all the time...he's just known for being out there, and dresses the part sometimes. This is actually pretty tame for him. LOL.

Great story, ...............He did exactly what eddie would have done if he did not like something that was his. Eddie would have trashed talked it and parted it out , gouged it , whatever he " feels " like doing as well.

Fact , there are quite a few players that have given or sold away their "van halen" signature guitars or don't play them much. I am with Bogner on the basswood. It is marginal for tone. Especially on it's own. I have built a ton of stuff out of it. It is all subjective. Some good some not so good. Too many people saying it is awesome just because eddie started using it as well. Too many people drinking the cool aid.

I would not doubt if eddie bought the amp to take it apart and figure out how to make his new amps sound better or like the Bogner . Kinda like the Soldano / Peavey thing

Ok both Eddie and Reinhold are eccentric

Difference is that Eddie made a much bigger dent in the music world than Reinhold
Edwards tone is and has been the most copped as well as his technique

Reinhold is kinda a bonehead because he ASKED Ed for a guitar and 600$
So I assume he gave him a EBMM EVH that he took apart and sold

    Bogner makes good amps

Ed has made history MANY times over

Eds eccentricness is almost completely forgotten by his amazing talent

To me there is a difference

This comparison is really stupid. Are you then gonna compare EVH and Jim Marshall, EVH and Mike Soldano? Ed is primarily a musician.

I really got a kick out of Bogner and I am sure at the time this story happened he did not have much money. I do agree that anytime Eddie gives someone a guitar which he has always been known to be very generous in that department=you keep it! The VHII ax he put in Dimebags coffin would of easily of fetched 250K at auction if not more. I can understand that a lot of guys are not fans of bass wood, but a bass wood body and maple cap is my preference for tone.

I love that combo too. Hell...Some straight basswood guitars sound great all by themselves. I own a couple that do, and you would be hard pressed to nail down one of them that it is basswood at all. Sounds much more like swamp ash, so it also depends on the cut, the moisture content, component combination, etc..
I just posted cuz I thought it was a fun interview and Bogner always cracks me up! He's a class A nutter....but he knows that!

Very interesting video. I'm another basswood/maple and solid basswood fan. I own 5 basswood guitars, and I don't think even two of them sound remotely similar (even when I've swapped in the same pickups). In fact, I once cut 2 basswood bodies within a few months of eachother for 2 guitars. The first was so hard that it felt like Alder, and it burned up 2 of my router bits! The second was so soft that you could almost dent it with your finger, and my router bits barely even got hot cutting it. The result? One heavy guitar that sounds almost like mahogany, and one super light guitar that sounds more like Paulownia or Swamp ash.

Didn't Ed start the whole basswood body thing with the EBMM? I don't think I have seen or heard of another guitar with a basswood body before that.

Naaa, there were plenty around before Ed used it, The Ibanez Jem series for example. Prior to that a lot of low/mid priced guitars used it.
