Default Comment on the new VH record from an industry insider

I apologize if this should be posted somewhere else, but the below comment is from a frequent poster on the Allman Brothers website who's a music industry type from Canada. Judging from the posts he's made over the years on that site about the ABB and their various spin-off bands, I trust that he's an experienced music industry guy. In the past his predictions about ABB tours, guests at the annual Beacon run, Gov't Mule and Derek Trucks band activity, etc. shows him to be legit and very knowledgeable of lots of things music business related. His below response is too a question I posed to him about the forthcoming VH album. Take it for what it's worth. Again, to the mods., sorry if this didn't deserve its own thread:

"Described to me as heavier than they have been in a while on some tracks with EVH firing off leads and going a little Whammy crazy at times much like the Women and Children First era.

A couple of other tunes as being potential hits. One guitar based and the other centered around the keyboards. The guitar one has a similar feel to Dance The Night Away. My buddy said the keyboard track not his style but admits it was pretty catchy.

EVH went back to his vault of demos to try and bring back some lost ideas. That could mean the well was dry or that he really wanted some of the old magic. The average song length is shorter than on III which tended to have longer songs. I personally liked the stretching out and not going for hits but .oh well.

Again I have heard nothing but trust my friend's taste and judgement completely. He has worked off and on with them for a long time and knows his way to tip toe around the VH brothers. Said not ground breaking stuff but kicks ass and should please some of the older fans."
"People say Cream gave birth to Heavy Metal," says Baker. "If that's so, we should have had an abortion."

Cool. Sounds like it'll be as good as some of us have hoped. Can't wait to read the comments from people complaining about keyboards.

To me, it seems like the band is trying to get a WACF/FW hard edge and a bit more pop-hard rock vibe like on VH2 and 1984. Doesn't need to be groundbreaking, I just want the great rock music I would expect from my favorite band.

Well I just want an album that sounds pretty decent. I don't care if the ideas came from 78 or 88. A shitty riff or song idea from 2011 doesn't do anything for us. While I respect musicians who want to try new things, there is a reason why so many of us stay with various artists. There is a familiarity to their subsequent releases. If Eddie was going to work with lets say Chris Cornell, ok branch out. If he is recording with Dave, I think the majority would rather have it seem like it came from the same tree as CVH.

Whether any of this is true remains to be seen but I would rather have an "insider" claim this than "sounds like VH3 but with Dave singing."

Let me reiterate that I completely trust that this guy is legit. I know some will inevitably chime in with the usual rant about a supposed "industry insider" but I sincerely believe this information is from a good source. As I said previous, this poster is very knowledgeable about a great many things that happen in the music business because he works with many acts himself and has made many predictions and passed on lots of information with regard to many, many bands. Obviously on the ABB site it's usually about the Allman Brothers or Gregg Alllman, or Warren Haynes' various projects, Derek Trucks, etc. but he also posts good juicy morsels about other bands that are discussed on the ABB site. I believe he works mostly on the touring side of the business. And you'll note that I'm not one to typically post these kinds of things and so that should tell you that I believe this source is legit. Anyway, his comments are encouraging.

That's my take too. In my opinion, VH ceased to be real technically "ground Breaking" after FW, but that doesn't mean they didn't do great stuff. Eddie even said around 84 that he was going in different directions, and being the gunslinger on guitar lacked importance to him any more.

I think, and this is just where I think they were going, is basically carrying on where they left off with Dave. I remember in interviews during the last leg of the 84 tour in Hit Parader, and Eddie said that the next album will probably be a bit heavier, so that still could have been in mind with this one.

as far as the digging back through demos and ideas...That's no secret. Since day one, Eddie has been digging deep into the archives.

    In relatively recent times:
Take Me Back = No More Waiting
Right Now = Rhodes piano riff from Wildlife Soundtrack
Top of the World = outro riff from Jump etc.....

Hell...Even Meanstreet was switched up, and came from Voodoo Queen, and the funk break before the solo came from She's the Woman!.... and let's not forget Hang ''Em High came from Last Night, though that was basically just lyrics only.
So there's been tons of pillaging the VH riff/tuneage vault over the years.

Happy to see the post.....Seems in line with what a good VH album should be.

    Thanks for posting the info.

This is all well and good, but when the f**k are the people who will actually be paying for the album get to hear it??!!! I am getting sick of hearing all of these insiders who have heard it, I want to hear this thing already! The amount of time this is taking is absurd.

Any info on vocals? "not groundbreaking" doesn't sound that good considering it's the return of van halen after 25 years. I'd expect more excitement. So it will be ok?

VH could crap in a bucket and it would kick ass.
