Default Great Van Halen radio moments!

So unless you listen to Satellite radio, its rare to hear anything by VH that isn't a hit on a lot of radio stations. I usually carry my Ipod with a radio transmitter or a stack of CDs in the car to hear what I want, but every now and then you hit the jackpot.

Tonight, went out with a good friend for a pitcher and the Giants/Rams game, dropped him off afterwards and moments later I hear Where Have All the Good Times Gone!! on the radio! Cranked it up, and the song faded out just as I put the car in park at my house. Great ride home!

Far and away the best Van Halen radio moment was back in 1991. FUCK had just been released and a radio station in Lincoln, Neb., was having a huge Van Halen promotion. By sheer luck I was the correct caller for one of the contests and ended up winning every VH CD from VH through FUCK (nine new CDs). This was just as I was transitioning from cassettes to CDs and, as a poor college kid at the time, was finding it too pricy to rebuild my music collection.

In an unrelated VH radio moment, I won a bucket of KFC chicken for knowing Sammy Hagar was once a boxer. Good chicken, but not as good as nine CDs.

I have actually never heard it.

I know I like VH's version of You Really Got Me about a zillion times better than the original.

Same here. Dave Davies doesn't like it, I'm pretty sure. I think Ray Davies does, though...and he should. VH's version has probably made him more money than the Kinks version.

I had never heard the Kinks' doing Where Have All The Good Times Gone, VH's version was the first one I knew of.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

It got to number one over here and stayed there for 2 weeks. I think it got into the top 10 in the States too - unlike VH's version!

Missed the entire FUCK album release and tour while in Kodiak Alaska serving in the Coast Guard (no rock radio there, only MTV so I got my share of Poundcake etc there). We sailed down to Honolulu for 2 months of training and within a day or two of being there we had the Honolulu rock station on and they debuted Won't Get Fooled Again and gave it a ton of airplay as I guessed they released that as a radio single to promote RHRN. Wish they played Honolulu while I was there but didn't, saw Metalicca there instead.

Although I have been surprised in the past, for example hearing Romeo Delight on the radio, I believe the most surprised I have been with the radio was this past year.

My son (age 10) and I were in the car, and he wanted to hear Hot For Teacher. We had been playing a lot of Guitar Hero VH, and he really liked the song. So I got my 1984 CD out, and put it in the CD player. The CD player couldn’t read it, due to all of the scratches. So I found another CD, that had a bunch of mp3’s on it, including Hot For Teacher. The CD Player couldn’t read that one either!!!!

I finally got very frustrated, and pressed the radio button. There was complete silence for about 2 seconds. And then the drums kick in. The radio station played Hot For Teacher, basically on cue. I didn’t know what was happening. I thought maybe the cd player started working.

Now, Hot for Teacher is obviously a popular song. No surprise there. However, the odds of this happening are astronomical.

It certainly was a great VH moment on the Radio.
    Right here I say....

Probably way way WAY back, when Dave and Al were interviewed on Rockline together (WACF days). I recorded it and listened to it over and over again. Dave was a cool mfkr.,, Probably the coolest mfkr on the planet at the time. Even Al was cool back then.

I really loved that Van Halen.

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman

I remember listening to Red Beard on Westwood one "in the studio" ( or whatever it was called) when he was debuting the F.U.C.K cd with the entire band, if I remember correctly. I was recording the show but the band kept talking over the songs and I was getting pissed off cause I wanted the songs on tape. When "Pleasure Dome" came on, the intro started, I was really liking this intro, then Eddie says (about 20 seconds in)"why do guitarists play these long boring intros", and then laughs. I was thinking STFU Eddie I'm trying to tape this shit.

When I was a kid, I was taping the radio and caught a sweeper DLR recorded for the local classic rock station, it went thusly...

"From out of the trees and onto your knees, it's Vaaaaaan Halen, Diamond David Lee Roth main mouthpiece for me and you on Q102."

I listened to that tape a lot. Still remember it 30 some years later.
What once upon a time made Van Halen unique in the progression of metal and hard rock (besides Eddie’s prowess as a guitarist) was its sense of fun, its willingness to be not just over the top, but weird.
