Default So which "Van Halen" guitar of yours sounds the best?

For me so far it's my EBMM Axis which is Basswood
    Great tone
    Thick and rich

Can't wait to put together my Franky

For years my Wolfgang.. then I got an EBMM. I love the bite is has. But the wolf is great too... I guess it depends on what sound I want at that time. For me I would say I like the sound and feel of the musicman a little more... I just hate having to adjust my neck when the weather changes. The wolf's like a tank. My dependable #1 by a landslide!

My cherry quilt Fender EVH by a mile. I stopped even looking at other guitars once I got this, have zero desire to play anything else. The only other guitar I would ever consider is another Fender EVH, probably used, at some point in the future.

Axis was the best. Had three, now two PV Wolfs. That Axis sounded and plays better than all of them. But the best sounding guitar I own is a Kramer 5150 replica I built. Korina body with Divebomb neck and Tone Zone pickup. Sounds sooo good!

Mine is either my Kramer Barretta (although it's not strictly an EVH guitar) or the VHI era Frankie tribute guitar that I build out of old bits of Strat.
The Barretta wasn't my favourite sounding guitar for a long time, until I stripped the factory finish off it and resprayed my own stripe design on it using very few coats (2 orange and 2 silver) of paint, changing the bridge, adding a brass block and fitting it with a Seymor Duncan Pearly Gates. Now it sounds warm and fat with great midrange.
The VHI that I built has a 70's Strat neck and a late 70's/early 80's Strat body, a Gibson Burstbucker III pickup, a 60's Strat bridge with bent saddles. The Burstbucker is a really sweet pickup and suits the Alder body perfectly. The tone is again, big and powerful but never harsh. I gig both of these guitars regularly and choose them over my Tobaccoburst Peavey Wolfgang, thats a great guitar too but I don't like the neck as much (sacrelidge!!)
The neck was also the reason I sold my pink EBMMEVH, which was the first one to enter the UK. Great sounding guitar, just didn't fit me right, I'm a Strat guy at heart so I tend to stick with what I know.

Best-sounding is probably my Warmoth that I put the new EVH Wolfgang pickup in. I do think it sounds better than my EBMM's or my Peavey Wolfgang.

Best playing VH-type guitar is probably the Rasta thing I built. I just feel better playing a strat-type body like Tommy. But my EBMM's are a close second.

My 1992 EVH EBMM is the best sounding EVH guitar i own.
That guitar just gets better with age.
Have played that guitar to death for almost 20 years now.
    Thing is a beast!
    I also own a 1999 Wolfgang and a GMW Kramer 5150.
    Best neck is the GMW.
EBMM is 2nd and Wolfie is 3rd.

Dang.... not a lot of love for the Peavey Wolfgang neck. I love that neck... a little chunky, but still fast and asymmetrical plus a very flat radius. But then again, I have massive hands, and tend to fret extremely hard.

I gotta say though, I've played an Axis, and I did like it a lot. I prefer the sound to the Wolf, although I do like the Wolf too. I'd pick the Axis for lead work, and my Wolf Special for Rhythm stuff. They'd probably compliment eachother recorded extremely well. I didn't like the EVH Wolfgang's tone quite as much as the Axis, but I didn't get to try it really loud or for very long.

The neck I'm really liking right now is a custom neck (made by Scott Fletcher) that is kindof a hybrid of the Wolf and Axis. It's got a Wolfgang style heel, truss rod, and fretboard, with an Axis style back profile, so it's a little thinner and 'faster' overall than a stock Wolf. And then just a regular inline 6 strat-like headstock. I've just gotten the guitar I'm building with that neck on it playable, and dang does it smoke! It seems kinda similar to the EVH Wolfgang neck, so I'd probably really like one of those too if I ever got around to playing one more.

Yeah I'm not a big Peavey Wolf fan. I rarely play mine anymore. Sacrilege I know.

My problem has always been the overly flat fretboard radius of many of these guitars. I know that they have a compound radius, obviously, but when I start to play at the dusty end of the neck I just find it doesn't suit my technique. Anything about a 12" radius gives me instant fatigue and my fingers don't work properly!! I suppose it come down to the fact that I have been playing Strat's and Tele's built in the 60's for most of my life and I'm used to a 7 1/2" and 9 1/2" radius that those guitars have. The back profile has never really bothered me as long as it's a nice 'chubby' C-profile. Horse's for course's I suppose.

I think ive said this here b4 but the Wolfgang is a tough neck to switch to after playing another guitar.

I think that's why it's not a favorite to me.
If i only play the Wolfgang it's ok though.
But switching to it after playing something else just feels weird.
    Anyone else think that?

If my memory serves, the serial number on that guitar is kinda special ain't it. I remember we chatted about it years ago on myspace.

    Yeah.
Even Mr. Ripley himself told me that was a cool guitar.
