Default A Cover of "Back in Black" that's Better than the Original?

I don't think it can be done.

It was said after Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, that the hardest thing in the world to do is write a good three-minute speech.
I think it might be equally hard to write a good three-chord rock song. (Okay, so there's a couple of extra chords in the chorus. That's beside the point. Nobody listens to "Back in Black" just for the chorus.)
In my opinion, the perfection of "B in B" is in the timing. The rhythm swings just a tiny, tiny bit. It's harder than hell to reproduce. I've never heard a bar band do it. Also, Malcom Young plays an "A/C#" on the third chord instead of just "A." That gives the chord a lot more depth.

Anyway, I found a few covers of "B in B" done by professionals:

    Carlos Santana

This is a mess. I don't know what he was going for here. Maybe he doesn't either. It sounds like everything and the kitchen sink. Rap vocals, Rock guitar, Latin percussion, and Doo-Wop background singers. Too much.

Here's Living Colour's stab at it:

Pretty good, but this was a big disappointment to me. Living Colour has a terrific rhythm section, but they don't nail it here. The bassist seems lost at times and he plays too much. It's also too fast. My guess is that it's a first or second take and they just said "good enough." It's not, though.

    Muse

This is good. A little thin in some places, but on the whole, very good. I like the bass line. Notice how the singer struggles mightily to get through the whole song? Brian Johnson has been doing it for thirty years and this guy can't get past the guitar solo! By the ending chorus, he's basically lost it. Good effort, though. Well fought. I'm sure it's not easy. I've never tried to really sing it.
This is my favorite of the bunch. Of course, it's also the one that sticks closest to the original. Nothing touches the original.

I quit looking after I found these three. What do you guys think? Is there a cover that's better than the original? I have my doubts.

Not many covers that do beat the original, especially with a band like ACDC.

That Santana record is one of the worst pieces of shit I've ever had the displeasure of hearing. Abominable.

Always thought Akira Takasaki was a phenomenal guitarist, but his band(s)
and singers particularly erred on the side of suck. This is no exception:

The rhythm section gets it, but the singing is terrible and I don't
dig the overdubbed vibe of the guitar. Akira kind of fell of the rails
in recent years, as I understand.

Ill stick with Angus on this one. Kinda reminds me of the RRHOF Slash butchering of VanHalen.

AC/DC are one of those 'less is more' bands. You cannot better their music with layers of guitars, shred solo's, virtuoso vocalists or advanced production techniques. Their music is simple and thats what makes it so difficult to replicate or improve. Add to that, that you need Malcolm Young and his locked down tight, subtle yet punishing rythm playing and you have the perfect recipe. There's no band on the planet that could 'better' an AC/DC tune because they're not AC/DC!

The thing that always blew me away with that song was the timing of the singing. It's like Brian Johnson uses the perfect amount of syllables and timing of his lyrics to give the music that extra fierce punch of authority. Couple that with the lyrics that are a subtle acknowledgment of losing a beloved band member, but still coming in with a tenacious attitude that always was a hallmark of AC/DC. Sometimes singers will shoehorn words in or add one too many syllables to get to what they are trying to say, but Back In Black is a perfect example of rock lyrics as they were meant to be.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I saw the Santana version live last weekend. The live experience didn't help the version any...

Outside of that, it was a great show.

I couldn't find Joan doing Back in Black, but I have heard her doing it somewhere. Found her doing Dirty Deeds, and I think she does a really good job.

But I have always like Joan Jett, she has a lot in common with AC/DC, she does simple very well. Some people do simple and it sounds simple. Some people like her and AC/DC can just make it sound great.

Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

+1 She had incredible delivery on covers and made them her own.
always liked her. You're right....AC/DC had some real simple tunes, but the attitude and stagger in their playing is what makes it so perfect and tough to match. Plus Angus' vibrato........Rick Emmett from Triumph used to call it Satan's laughter! lol

No shit. I had the misfortune of that disc being played in our office over and over for the first week. I've never been a huge Santana fan at all, and this just solidifies my opinion. Pure garbage. It's just a major groaner. Everything from the production, song selection to performance is forced, overplayed, and out of place.

You should give his cover of Dance The Night Away a listen, it's astoundingly good. Totally blows the original out of the water for pure pop energy and danceability
