    Default Help.....

Alright guys, I need a little string advice...

In 25 years of playing guitar, I've broken strings maybe a half dozen times. I started playing with this new band about a month ago, and I've broken 2 in the last week (A and D).

I've always played with Slinky .9's, but after this latest mishap, I'm thinking of moving up to .10's. The strings weren't that old, I expected to be due for a set soon, but these were still sounding pretty bright. I don't think I have been playing any differently (harder) than I normally do, but I guess it's possible I'm "attacking" a little more, being in a new gig.

My main guitar is a Peavey HP Special W/Floyd.

My question is, if I move up to .10's, what changes will I need to make to my setup, just based on string gauge?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Depending on your guitars personality, you will most likely have to make some minor adjustments to the trem claw springs in the back by tightening the screws a bit.

When I put 10s on my Kramer I had to tighten them a bit and then retune and check tension.

should not be a huge deal if you decide to switch over.

Change string brands. I stopped using slinkys because of this.

I Actually think it's the slinky's. I Used them forever, and never had a problem, then in the last few years I started breaking them ALL the time. Didn't matter what guitar I used and I use .10's. I switched to GHS Boomers and they are almost indestructible. Might be worth looking into. I don't know if Ernie Ball changed how they do things but the slinkys just don't hold up, IMO.

Wow.....I didn't even think of it being a manufacturer issue, as I've used them forever with no issues, but it makes some sense. Maybe they've recently slacked off on their quality control.

You kind of expect to break a high E or a B on occasion, but an A, and then a D a week later?

Ya, in my experience, the brand of string 'causes' it to break a lot sooner than the gauge of the string. (I've had 11's that broke way before another brand of 9's, etc., etc.)

I'm like the reverse of you guys. I was a TERRIBLE string breaker for years and years. I'd have to bring 2-3 guitars to get through a show.

One day I switched my picks maybe 8 years ago, never a broke a string again. I'm not kidding, I don't know if was the picks, or my playing changed, but the only reason I change strings now is because they get old. And I've been playing the same .09 Slinkys for 15 years now.

So maybe I'm the exception but once I switched picks I never had a problem with Slinkys. I do think you guys are bigger guys and play a lot harder than I do. But I bend the shit out of my strings and I don't break 'em.

I've always used the thinnest tortex picks I can get, but I do play with a lot of bends and harmonic bar dives.

I think you guys just beat the shit out of your strings, I'm a skinny guy. I probably play like a dainty flower.

When I tried Ernie Ball's I wasn't a fan. They went out of tune constantly and I think the G or B string snapped on me.

I use D'addario .009's and I could not be happier. I do ALOT of bends and I have a rather strong pick attack and they hold up great.

If you do move up to 10's, then you should take time to readjust and find a good balance in string height and tension.

i use slinky 9's with no issues....

I know with Kahlers , you will get sharp edges, I used to break alot with my charvel.

but not really alot of places to get a sharp edge on a floyd...

are they breaking in the exact same place on the string each time? that may give you a hint of whats going on.

Yeah, the A and the D, both broke about an inch from the bridge.

hmmm id check really close its not hitting some sharp edge. what do you consider not old?

or maybe a deffective batch, ya never know.

can always try 10s, I think you will like the bite and tone, just little harder on fingers and may need a slight setup change.

make sure you don't have a little burr or something in the string cavity, or something that is not letting the string be locked in straight.
