Aw, come on! If Gilbert really sued Edward for the drill, then Eddie should countersue all the guitarists who ripped his style, sound, and tapping:

PAUL GILBERT ( Big time Eddie rip off!)
    Vito Bratta
    George Lynch
    Nuno Bettencourt
    Steve Vai
    Reb Beach

This case would not stand for a second. Eddie does not listen to Mr. Big music or Paul Gilbert's style. He stumbled on the drill himself during the recording of FUCK.

In closing arguments, if Paul Gilbert were such the innovator and master with the drill to the guitar, how come . . .and this is fact . . .did he have to stop for ten minutes in the middle of a Mr. Big show because the drill got caught in his hair and had to be cut out? Paul has no suit here!

The only thing Paul Gilbert would gain from a lawsuit like this would be an enormous legal bill. I can't see why he'd bother.

Ok, lets get one thing straight....Edward Van Halen is ENTITLED to rip off anyone he wants to, considering the thousands of guitarists that have ripped him off. Also, I could have sworn that Paul Gilbert said he didn't think Ed was ripping him off one bit. The way that they use the drill is actually different, so it ain't that big of a deal. I never heard about any lawsuit on this subject.

Man!!! Some of you whiners are making me sick. Why rip on Paul Gilbert? I never heard of a lawsuit nor do I think he is an Eddie rip off. Gilbert has a distinct style that he has stuck with for years. Yes, Mr. Big is not as big as VH but shit!!!! How many albums have you guys made and how many world tours have you whiners been on? I like every guitar player listed opn the "clone" post!!! These guys have Eddie as an influence!!! Let's respect these fine musicians for playing and making it "big", rather than ripping on them because Eddie is an influence!!!!

I play guitar and eddie has influenced me ,and i don't think i would sue one of my influences.Paul Gilberts jealous of the name Eddie Van Halen has made for himself. What's Gilbert's biggest claim to fame?Mr. Big........and that ain't saying a whole hell of a lot.

    Here's a story taken from www.paulgilbert.com

    MAKITA IN MY HAIR

"Yes, it's true. On May 1st, 1990 I accidentally got a Makita drill hopelessly tangled in my hair in front of 15,000 perplexed Rush fans. The next day, Alex Lifeson made this sign, and put it next to my drill onstage. Also, next to my drill, was an assortment of other tools that the road crew thought I might prefer. The only one I remember specifically was the GLUE GUN. I stayed with the drill."

I'm not going to comment if Paul Gilbert sued Ed for using drill. PG is not an Eddie-clone. Eddie has had an influence on him but his playing style is not similar to Eddie's. If you listen to his latest solo albums or the recent Racer X album you can tell the difference. His solo albums are more Beatles style than hard rock. And the latest Racer X album is much more heavier than Van Halen.

I thought Paul and Eddie used the drill in two different manners. I thought Paul glued three picks to the drill bit and used it that way while Eddie just used the sound of the drill through his pick ups.

I don't think Paul Gilbert sounds anything
like EVH. Nor do I think George Lynch or
Steve Vai do. EVH is not the only guy out
there with a style his own. Gilbert is far more of a "schooled" player. It doesn't make
him better or worse than ED. Just different.
I never heard anything about a lawsuit, and the fact that EVH used it on the RHRN tour says to me that no lawsuit took place. Sounds a little silly to me.
