    Default The Wedge

I lived and grew up in Newport Beach just a couple blocks north of The Wedge, a famous body surfing spot here in Southern CA. Up until my late 30's (when I got married of course) I used to be the typical surfer bum and would dodge work any time it picked up there.

So surf along SoCal beaches is way up this week and I knew today would be epic. Every LA area news station had a broadcast truck down there and there was probably 300 - 500 people at any given time. There was even a fire truck and rescue parked on the street on standby (last surfer killed there was in '09). I'm a bit too old and out of shape to do it myself anymore but it was just fun watching the body surfers (and a few board surfers) risk getting their ass handed to them.

    Here's some shaky-cam video I shot:

And here's some from yesterday from another YouTube uploader:

That's pretty wild. We used to go down there and stay at the Balboa Inn (don't know if it's still around) for a long weekend and surf and drink. Ahhhhhh.
Saw footage of it on Good Morning America where the surf was washing up into the parking lot. Crazy.

Depending on the intensity of the waves, I may walk down there tomorrow. Very cool.

I plan on being there tomorrow on a bike ride. I saw a 25 footer there in 09 (July I think) and just about shit myself and got out of the water. Guys like Laird Hamilton are fucking nutjobs that surf that shit every day.

Lived on 48th and Seashore (among other dives) in the early 90s going to school at UCI.

I remember a break a little north of The Wedge called Barrels (I think).

Pure beach break. Still have the scars to remind me what a dumbass I was when I was 22..
