Default The Franky- What if?! Variations On a Theme

So, I've always been fascinated by alternate history and parallel universes... you know: what if Hitler won WWII, what if JFK lived, what if
    Napolean won at Waterloo etc...

Well, "what if" scenarios can also apply to the Franky!

For instance, what if Ed had kept the Franky black and white? He surely would have added a Floyd...

What if Ed had gone with sonic blue?...

What if Ed had kept the sunburst Strat?...

...is this what it could have ended up looking like?...

How about if he had simply decided to paint Dakota Red over it?...

And what about the black Strat?...

..could it have ended up like this?...

And what if Ed had chosen blue instead of red?

I love alternate histories too...the Dakota red Frankie looks cool. The blue Frank looked good on Wolfie's bass last tour. I've always loved the original black and white stripes though. Great idea for a thread...be curious to see some other versions of Frankie.

I've seen quite few over the years.. yellow, green, pink...

As for the Dakota Red Franky..

..it's my latest project and I'm really happy with the way it plays and sounds!

The alternate reality thing is really cool! My friend and I made an alternate history Frankie about 2 years ago.... we went with basically "what if Ed never painted it red, (left the original look of the guitar intact), while still performing playability mods?"

The resulting guitar is made to look like it took all of the abuse of the real frankie up to the most current pics, had all of the necessary upgrades to it (floyd, quarter, etc.), but still retained the original overall look.

I'll have to find hi res pictures of it finished, but here are some pics of the body when we were about half-way done with it:

This is 5150 Frankenstrat's guitar BTW.

Very cool thread; it would also be interesting to see these alternative versions with the different necks that have been on Franky over the years (think the banana neck on B&W Franky, painted to match)

The red in that close up looks a little bright to be Dakota. Looks more Fiesta. . .but it's probably the light.

It's definitely the lighting... that red is actually much more subdued.

Nice collection Jimi! Just wondering if you have a favorite as far as tone? I think your blue Franky is the winner - nice!

Each one has a unique tone and personality, Lou. All of the bodies are northern ash, but I deliberately equipped each with a different pick-up and installed four different types of big blocks on the Floyds. The VH I has an SD '78 with a brass block, the Sonic Blue VH I has a Dimarzio Super Distortion with a brass block, the Sunburst Franky has an SD IM1 with a brass block, the Dakota Red Franky has an EVH Frankenstein with a stainless steel block, the Black Franky has a Smits Ultra 7 with a tungsten block and the Blue Franky has a 59/CC Hybrid with a titanium block.

IMO, the EVH Frankenstein is a great pick-up and it sounds great in both northern ash and swamp ash.

Jimi, have you tried the EVH pickup mounted in pickguard instead of hard mounted? Personally, I thought it lost some of it's punch? Probably just me...

I did mount one onto the pickguard of this swamp ash body...

I just plugged in the Dakota Red Franky and compared it with the one above and honestly, Lou, I could not discern any significant difference between direct mount and pickguard mount in terms of tone and power.
