    Default Multiculturalism...

    ...sucks

“They said no because my of my ‘headgear,’ “ Ms. Salem said. “I said, ‘It’s not my headgear, it’s my religion.’ “

Dispute Over Muslim Headgear at Amusement Park Breaks Out Into Large-Scale Altercation

A New York amusement park was temporarily shut down Tuesday after a large-scale altercation erupted between Muslim patrons and park rangers over a disagreement on headgear rules.

Muslim women in a tour group at Rye Playland in Westchester County were reportedly denied access to several rides because they were wearing hijabs – their traditional headscarves.

"Our headgear policy is designed to protect the safety of patrons and safety is our first concern,” said Deputy Parks Commissioner Peter Tartaglia. “This policy was repeatedly articulated to the tour operator, but unfortunately the message did not reach some of the members of his group."

The altercation began when park officials offered refunds and members of the Muslim group got in a scuffle, Tartaglia told The Journal News. Two park rangers were injured when they jumped in to break it up, he said, and were taken to local hospitals.

Dozens of police vehicles from nine agencies then rushed to the park, where officers arrested 15 people – mostly for disorderly conduct, authorities said. The disturbance involved around 30 to 40 people.

All other visitors were not allowed into the park between 4 and 6 p.m. ET, with exit ramps from I-95 closed as well.

The tour group -- the Muslim American Society of New York -- was at the park to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, an Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

“Everybody got mad, everybody got upset,” Amr Khater, a Brooklyn resident, told The Journal News. “It’s our holiday. Why would you do this to us?”
(sounds more like they did it to themselves)

Khater said park rangers notified him of the headgear rules upon arrival.

Rye Playland, shown above, was temporarily closed Tuesday after a disagreement over a headgear rule broke out into a large-scale altercation.

Part of the problem is going to be that this is a government-owned and government-operated amusement park.

If the government built and runs an amusement park which cannot be enjoyed by all people, then they could conceivably have a problem.

If this were a private amusement park, then that's the problem of the Muslims in question.

I believe that's in the fifth amendment of the Constitution that gives the government the power to build and operate amusement parks.

If this is correct then the park cannot be held responsible, the tour operator should be. I have worked at an amusement park and have seen first hand what can happen when safety warnings are ignored or sidetracked for fear of persicution/litigation and it aint pretty and usually involves blood and broken bones. The tour operator should have made the rules and safety policies clear to the patrons.

Multiculturalism is great, these are just unreasonable people. Happens all the time and has nothing to do with multiculturalism. I'm guessing this isn't the first time that a muslim went to that amusement park.

I don't have a problem with this. What happens if one of this headdresses gets tangled up somewhere? What happens if it gets into some gearing? I remember skiing and seeing a women's hair caught up in life. Pretty screwed up stuff.

Safety first. You don't want to play nice, you don't get in the park.

you can get in the park, there's just rides you can't go on. Up here at our major part (Wonderland) - you'll sometimes see Muslim women in their hijab, you just don't see them on rides. I'm yet to see any of them getting in a fight about not being allowed on the ride. These are just unreasonable people.

Whether it's owned by the government or not, the park has to be operated in a manner that is safe for all participants. If they were only requiring these women to not wear headgear, then I could see your point. If they require everyone who wants to ride to remove their headgear including ball caps, scarves, etc, then there shouldn't be a problem. And it is an amusement park after all where there can be danger if safety is not first not a public transportation bus.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

The one thing I find strange about these incidents is that they result in violence. I donít know much about Islam but it is my understanding that the headgear is worn as an outward sign of modesty. So the resulting act of a dispute involving someoneís right to be modest over their safety is to start throwing hay-makers?

Could me that the men in the group were the ones who got irate and caused a scene.

The Muslims can go fuck themselves, can I make it any plainer?

Either integrate into society or go back to living under a fucking rock. Australia has it right.

Why do we pander to these nutjobs?

I actually think it is a winning platform!

People might say I am prejudiced, and that would be incorrect.

I am not pre-judging them at all, I am judging them.

Our way of life is better, if you don't like it and are not willing to make concessions in your public life outside of your home and mosque, don't come live here. And that goes for all the right wing nut job Christians too.

I don't give a shit what you do inside of your home or church/mosque, but once you step outside into the real world, you need to abide by the rules society has set as part of being a citizen in said society.

If you don't like it, there are some countries run by Muslims like Iraq and Iran, go live there, I hear they are great places to live....
