    Default Not Cool, Best Buy

Wasn't sure where to put this, here, or the Irene Thread. Mods feel free to move it. I feel it needs special attention and our outrage be placed at this bullshit attempt at gouging people.

As hurricane Irene bears down on the Jersey Shore, the Best Buy in Howell, NJ has taken it upon themselves sell cases of Dasani water for $40.56. One of the DJs for New Jersey 101.5 just sent this photo to theCHIVE.

At a time when it’s so important for these seaside communities to come together to help each other out (maybe even lower the price on water, eh), it’s disappointing to see a massive corporation like Best Buy not only assume zero social responsibility, but also go the extra mile to make a buck by selling bulk cases of water at the single bottle price during an emergency.

So I put it to you, Chivers. Is this ethical?

UPDATE: I just called Best Buy and spoke to one employee and a manager to confirm the photo. Both refused to answer my questions and told me I had to call corporate offices. My response was, ‘All you have to do is deny that you are doing this. It’s that simple.’
Neither party denied it. Instead I was rudely directed to corporate and then they hung up on me.

UPDATE #2: The manager of the Best Buy has responded and said, “… Sunday August 28th 2011, we will (be) price matching any local supermarket’s price for cases of water if they are needed for one day only as a gesture of good will.”

But why $40 and 56 cents? Why not 40 bucks or 41? What's with the 56?

Price gouging during a disaster is a crime. Someone needs to report this to the Attorney General of New Jersey. It's more than unethical.

Who in the hell would go to an electronics store to buy water, anyway ?

Plus like Mike said....a $1.69 a bottle doesn't sound like gouging to me, just sounds like they're not giving a discount for buying in bulk.

Paying $2.50 for a Gatorade every day doesn't sound extreme.....paying $60 for a case of 24 sure does.

Actually, "price gouging" during a disaster is good.

It's not in Best Buy's best interest to "gouge" people for water, forsaking post-disaster customers in place of a 2000% markup on water today.

Let's take the disaster part out. Every summer when the heat wave starts, the local Lowes and Home Depots run out of portable evaporative water coolers very quickly. Why? Demand shot up but prices stayed the same. Now, some people might need them because their A/C broke and it's hot; some people might need them because they don't have A/C, their swamp cooler broke, and they're really old or have a newborn baby they need to protect; some people might want to save money by not running their A/C at night, some people might already have a portable swamp cooler but want to snatch a backup in case theirs breaks and will take it back after the heat wave. Bottom line is that it's hot, and the coolers are the same price during the heatwave as they are in winter time.

If companies raised the prices of these units before a heat wave, not only would they likely not run out, but the people that most need them will end up with them. The higher prices weed out the people that don't really need them. The high profit margin is also incentive to make more of them, making sure that the area does not run out of coolers. In fact, Lowe's and Home Depot would find it profitable to make unscheduled deliveries of these units to the affected areas precisely because they'd make more shipping them overnight from stores in surrounding areas to the local stores so they can sell them for more.

This "gouging" is now good because, if they want, more people will have access to evaporative coolers because those that need them less will think twice before buying and Lowe's and Home Depot have an increased incentive to concentrate their selection of coolers.

Instead, prices don't go up (because it looks bad), and the stores run out. Which is better?

These factors don't change when it comes to a disaster. One thing that we know for sure is that Best buy actually has water. While other stores are selling out of water in a national disaster, Best Buy actually has some to sell to those who really need it precisely because they are selling it for $40. Other stores will sell out of water quickly because it is cheap.

An unchanged, cheap price increases hoarding and overpurchasing, often leaving those in need high and dry. Not only will I, if I am desperate, know that Best Buy has water, Best Buy might find it profitable to take water from surrounding stores and bringing it in to that store, so people can actually have water when they need it.

Sure, some people will provide this stuff out of the kindness of their hearts. But if all the other stores have run out of water and Best Buy has some, are they really the bad guy? What's better, actually having water at $40, or not having water at $2?

How? Laws of supply and demand aren't somehow repealed by a storm. Demand goes up, prices stay the same, and then there's a shortage. You can't rely on kindness to provide enough water in a disaster.

Low prices in those situations encourage hoarding and waste.

Dasani 24-packs normally go from $3.99-$9.99 at a grocery story or Target, etc.

If my family is thirsty and every store other than Best Buy that had a heart and kept prices there sold out of water very quickly, should I be pissed that Best Buy is charging an incredible amount or should I be happy they have some?

They still have some because it's expensive.

After Katrina, people came down and sold generators at crazy profits. But what's better--being out of generators at regular price, or having generators at crazy prices.

I think if you were in desperate need of one, you'd agree with me.

Actually, that's pretty basic economics, law of supply and demand.

I don't happen to completely agree with it, since there are other factors at play in such a situation, but that's a pretty pure market view.

Why not just put up a ring and have people fight for the water. Winner take tall. It's fair.
