Default My First Ever Studio Day

Well, my little band is actually going into the stdio today.

I am uber nervous, out of the band I am the only one who has never done this before.

Also being the least talented of the three by a long shot, and having to sing and play bass due to being a trio, I have trepidation that I will be the reason we are on take 23.

    Wish me luck!!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

That's awesome. Best of luck. Just try to be that kid that was sitting on the edge of his bed practicing. I know, easier said than done.

I've never done it. Would love to. You'll be fine.

When I was in high school, my bro was a Psych major in college. He knew I was great at basketball, but I'd freeze in front of the crowds. He talked to one of his psych profs about it. The prof told him a common practice to calm down and relax was to think of your belly button. Weird. Can't say that put a dent in too much, but I did try. Maybe it was the lint that weirded me out .

I'm thinking now, thinking of female body parts would have worked better, or embarrassed the crap out of me.

Obviously too late to wish you luck. It is fun to record in a studio, you just have to keep your mind on the task at hand and don't SETTLE. Because if you say it's "good enough" you'll look back and be annoyed. If it takes 30 takes to get something right, it always is worth it in the end IMO. I know we all like to say, "Oh it sounds fine, let's move on." But I have regretted it. If it's wrong, fix it, or do it right. The end product will be that much better.

Report back how it went man, I really want to know.

An important thing to remember in the studio is that you need to be yourself and play how you play. Even if you're a lesser-experienced player, you have a certain "comfort zone" you fall into when in environments you're already used to. You really want to find that zone as much as possible and just play your music. Having been a studio owner for 16 years, I've seen a lot of young guys get themselves so amped up for recording, they actually play worse. Always make sure your gear is in top shape BEFORE you get to the studio (having to worry about changing strings or discovering that your intonation is way out makes recording day both chaotic and frustrating), and give yourself decent warm-up time. Then... settle in. Stay positive. Enjoy the experience.

I think staying positive is really important. Because it's really easy to get frustrated when you're recording.

I find that i play best in the studio when im pissed off.
That's what a producer is for.
They tell u that sucked and to play it again and again till you wanna smash your guitar.

If your using protools u can punch several parts together.
    That's how Nuno does it.
His solos are 100 takes all mixed together.

Kinda funny, Johnny... This is all the exact opposite of how I work in the studio! I generally don't play as well when I'm pissed off (with some notable exceptions over the years). I've also really stepped away from splicing parts together or even punching in; I really try to get literally every track in one take whenever possible.

But... it's a couple of examples of how we all work differently.

I like to do my solos in one shot too but I'll definitely punch parts if necessary.

Everything said here already is GREAT advice. Stay relaxed, but keep enough on your toes that you're playing the best you possibly can. If it takes you 100 takes to nail one little part, don't sweat it. Some of the best players you listen to probably do the same thing.

I think the biggest thing is, don't get discouraged. Whether you don't feel like you're playing up to your own standards, or if you have a group of producers screaming at you telling you how badly you just played that take (both extremes), just try not to get down on yourself. Don't take anything personal, and just look at everything said to you as a tool. Don't think in terms of compliments or criticisms -- use ALL of the feedback you get and use it to get your recording project where you want it to go, and to what you hear in your head.

For example, if the engineer is giving you crap about how you can't get a section tight, use that feedback as a tool to get a little pissed at that particular section, and your anger will probably help you play it more forcefully and in time. Get pissed at the SONG, not yourself or your playing abilities, and when you do nail it, you'll feel great. Or if the producer is blown away by a solo take you just did, ask to do it a few more times. Knowing that he liked it and that you already have a good take might take the metal pressure off and you might play looser and more naturally on the next few times through it, and come up with something even more amazing. etc. etc. You'll find pretty quickly how you best operate in the studio -- so go with it once you find it.

    Just have fun with it!

We did two songs yesterday that he is going to do a basic mix on and send to us, and have us comment on and then go back in and work on if need be.

Let me tell you, I was sweating like a pig at first. But I think this producer is the best type for a hack like me. Very patient, kind of the "that was good, but why don't se see if you can get a better take on the pre-chorus, but let's start from the beginning."

Ie, "that take sucked, try again", but it helped for me.

He was also experienced enough to know I was really nervous, and said some things to calm me down, as my first two vocal takes were BRUTAL. He knew I liked Van Halen, and once he said "you think David Lee Roth hits all the notes when recording? Don't worry about it and let it rip. If it takes twenty takes it takes twenty takes."

He was really big on getting the "energy" level high instead of making sure everything was note on perfect, which is how I prefer the music I listen to, so I think this guy will work out real well for us.

I have never been run through my paces like this before either however, especially on vocals. Try singing it this way. Ok, drop an octave here, try singing it falsetto....dear God, after about four hours I could hardly talk!

But I had a great time, can't wait until our next time in there.

Will post any results once I have them.

    Thanks for all the advice!

The producer really helped with that, because after hearing my first vocal take, I was almost in a panic!

Sounds like you did pretty well.

Unlike a lot of guys here my first takes are usually shit. It usually takes me a couple of passes through a song to play it right. Same with solos. Once in a while I'll get it on the first take, but rarely.

I've been there after the first take saying, "Wow that was some truly shitty playing." You just have to forget it and do it again.

Sometimes there's magic on the first or second take.
    Instrument wise.

Every vocal u hear on major recordings are comp together.
Every syllable could be from a different take.
When i was in the studio with Desmond he would be sitting there picking syllables & words from different takes to complete the lines.
When it's played with the track you can't tell although i knew an engineer who said they can listen to a song a hear the comps.

Once in a while you can hear it on a song.
    A word will sound weird.
One VH vocal mistake that has gotten out is "From Afar" @ 2:29
