There is a lot of good stuff in that interview. The Dance the Night Away story is hilarious. I've always wanted to hear Eddie say to me, c'mon I'll show you the tape room. I'd love to take like a year of my life and just sift through those tapes for 8 hours a day.

Even Alex is a Chickenfoot fan!!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

I don't have any sound at work. Is this the extended version of the infamous "better be wearing a cup" interview?!

No no cup stuff, this is a different interview. Eddie and Alex are in a good mood here and don't bag on Dave or Sam really. They make fun of Dave a bit but they do have good things to say about both Dave and Sam. There are some interesting insights into what makes these guys tick, and they really are regular schmoes as Eddie says as one point. Eddie genuinely doesn't get the guitar hero tag and it makes him uncomfortable.

Alex really is his brother's keeper: "It took Ed a long time to fight for it but when WE recorded it, THEY all went WOW!" (on 'Jump') You'd think he too was fighting Dave, Mike and Ted T all the way in defence of 'Jump' even though I'm sure Ed himself has said 'everyone else in the band' was against the song. If ever there was a person who knew which side his bread was buttered on (as we say in Blighty), it's Alex Van Halen.

    Really interesting stuff.
"I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and Iīve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed viewing it. A couple things come to mind. One, I suspect Al smoked a very good fatty just previous to the interview and two, I get the impression that Al is much more involved in the writing process than we realize. Just a hunch. The Panama story was pretty interesting as well.

Does anybody know how long after the video for "Humans Being" this interview was filmed? I only wonder because Ed looks truly terrible here - so, so thin and ill - The Verve's tune "And the Drugs Don't Work" springs to mind! It's quite remarkable because he looked in good shape in the Twister stuff.

I think this was filmed in late 96/early 97.

Gary is already working with the band at this point.

So maybe 7 or 8 months?

Thanks, JB. Shocking how he went downhill so rapidly.
