Default Getting back in to playing shape... Thoughts?

Hey guys, been a while since I posted.

I am just about to head back to Indiana for school, and this has kind of been on my mind lately. My playing lately is not where I would like it to be at the moment. I listen to recordings of myself from earlier this year (january through March or so) and I really sounds so much faster, comfortable, and just generally better with my lead playing in particular.

I think it was mainly because I was at school, cooped up in a little apartment, where a lot of the time i would spend hours upon hours playing my Wolfgang special and Kramer 5150. On a good day, I could go as long as 6 hours or so...

Have any of you guys gone through similar spells, where you just arent happy with how you play? How do you come back from those sort of things? I think i just need to get back in the habit of practicing for long stretches at a time.

You just gotta play and have fun.
Get inspired and listen to new things.
It will make u want to play more and u will get back into it.

I go for weeks where i don't even touch a guitar.
But im at the point where i can just pick it up and be right back where i left off.

Hey Johnny, I really like your new song "Fabulous Girl".
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

    Practice, practice, practice....

I usually play guitar every day, but I can really tell a difference when I miss a day or more of playing (or if I play less than an hour a day). Takes me longer to warm up my 43 yr old fingers. I have arthritis in my hands and fingers, and I sometimes use a hot water bottle to warm up my hands if I spend time away from the guitar. I also take a cherry extract tablet every day, (helps with arthritis pain) or just eating cherries works too. But in the end, there is no substitute for practice.

    A fellow IU brethren!

I know this is going to sound weird, but I wish I would have learned this much earlier in my playing career: the mental approach is about 90% of the battle. Check out a book called, "The Inner Game of Tennis." Take a gander and see if it speaks to your situation.

I often find that if I DON'T touch a guitar for a week or so my playing seems better, fresher and easier! Having said that, I find it almost impossible not to touch one for even a day, it's been such a huge part of my life for the past 30yrs. One trick I like to do is to try to work whole songs on guitar while I'm nowhere near one and then go home and try to play waht I've worked out in my head without listening to the original tune, then later on try to play along to it (The last song I learned this way was Don't Look Back by Boston). Another thing I've done is to download a backing track to a song I've not heard in ages and try to remember the song without listening to the original, I recorded my tribute to Gary Moore this way too (I recently recorded The Loner), the advantage of doing it this way is you end up adding your own stamp to a tune, not copying hte original note for note.

Hey. I was in a similar situation earlier this year, and a lot of the linkers in the guitar room helped tons with their advice. (Thanks much again BTW guys!) For me it was a case of severe burnout, and honestly, I'm still not over it 100%. I just am not happy with my signature playing style. By that I mean what I'm known for. I feel it has suffered. I lack concentration, inspiration, Just unhappy in general. it got so bad I thought about hanging it up for good. This after spending thousands on a studio upgrade.
It was about the worst case of writers/players block. I've ever had. I couldn't even press the rec. button for fear of failure.
I had so much going on in my personal life too, and that was the main cause, but to me it was like the kiss of death for creativity and discipline; the foundation of a musician.

Terrible feeling, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I was just bummed...but I think the advice the guys gave me applies.
It helped a great deal. I think the general message is don't over think it, and try to have fun. Don't make it a burden, and try different musical directions for a bit. I started playing a lot more slide and playing/studying bass, and it really improved my chops almost by osmosis or something! haha!
    anyway....Check out this thread.

I occasionally have days were my playing gets very sloppy; I'm never sure if this is because I'm tired, distracted or stressed. I either set down the guitar and come back to it later, or I just try to have fun and play through it. Daily practice certainly builds skill, technical perfection and muscle memory, but I occasionally set the guitar down for a day or two and then come back and my playing seems to get much smoother. For me a break for a day or two is very helpful. Again, that's just me, and might not work for most.
When I'm stuck creatively, I usually try to disorient myself by changing the guitars tuning, trying a different tone from my guitar or amp, playing slide, playing different styles of music etc.
Anyway, I think we all agree, the basic key here is to have fun and not turn your playing into work. Good luck!
