Default Copter Crash/Shootdown Kills 30 Americans

    http://news.yahoo.com/copter-downing...192301718.html

A U.S. Special Ops helicopter was shot down sometime yesterday in Afghanistan, killing at least 30 Americans and a smaller number of Afghan commandos. On board were 22 SEALS from Seal Team 6. Hell of a hit for the SEALS.

Thoughts/prayers go out to their families.

    God bless them.

Hope I don't seem naive, but that's a lot of people on one helicopter. Those things must be huge, or at full capacity. Guess I'll have to read up on it a little more.

No, 47, you're not naive. If you don't know, you don't know. Here are pictures of a CH=47 Chinook Medium Transport Helicopter:

It can carry almost 50 personnel. It's a rather large beast and is quite vulnerable at take off, landing, and higher altitudes.

My heart broke when I heard about this yesterday. How sad. I can't tell you how special these guys are to me. I supported Spec Ops - both US and Iraqi (who were a bunch of bad-asses) - during my last deployment. I worked with ST6 a little bit...had to train them to be field ordering officers (FOO; I wound up firing one of them for exceeding their dollar limit, but didn't make a big deal of it). When a Special Operator is killed, that community really feels it. I was only with them for six months and I learned to really feel it, too. I still do. I love those guys, and I thank God and their families for giving them to us.

Two of the dead were a US military working dog and a linguist/interpreter. First, these canines are special because of what they are: man's best friend. They are loyal and fierce combatants who work hard for us. Such wonderful servants. You will never believe how much it can lift your spirits in a deployed environment when you are able to pet one of these warriors for a few minutes. Also, these linguists are special because they have put themselves in danger to work with us. Lots of them have lost family members or even their entire family just because they work with us. Some of them can't ever leave the base because they'll be killed for being a "traitor".

May God grant peace and comfort to the families and friends they left behind.

Such terrible news. The same unit that kills Bin Laden is now faced with this tragic blow. Horrible twist of cruel fate.

I think it's time to depart from Afghanistan. It's not a job for the US military. The main problem there is you have a 23% literacy rate. No stability, no democracy no modernity of any kind can happen when three quarters of the population can't read. It's sad that the taliban will come back, but maybe that's the country's destiny for the time being. You can't force democracy and modernity on a people that do not want it.

Bingo! And even if democracy is successfully implemented it will not stop the Taliban from continuing to function in the mountains..or Pakistan..etc.

Sad news. You expect casualties in war but this many in one incident is harder to take.

Some (relatively) good news, they're saying they got the ones who downed the copter:

and some stuff on the SEALS who died:

One of them was from DMad & my area. Rockford, IA. DMad's ex-husband helped his dad train him at a local boxing club.

I got a message from ex-wife #1 today on FB. THe ex-in-laws are a part of The Patriot Guard Riders from my hometown. They own a very successful contracting business. As we all know, the press, since the OBL raid, have been relentless is trying to get pictures of the SEALs. She sent me this message this morning:

I know how you feel about our troops. Especially having been in the Marines, your brother just retiring from The Corps, and your nephew getting commissioned tomorrow.

There is a group of 6 Navy Seals on their way to Rockford, up near Charles City, today to deliver the truck and personal possessions of the Seal killed Saturday. They hid their trucks and gear in our shop last night because the Peoria (IL) media had a field day yesterday and caused havoc.

They have a small escort of PGR & ISP but otherwise you wouldn't have a clue who they are. Humbling to meet men who are putting so much on the line everyday knowing that one day they might leave and not come home. They were just a great group of guys doing what they had to do for a good friend of theirs. Makes the things that we complain about in life seem so senseless.

They are part of Seal Team 6 - any one of those guys could've been the one who shot Bin Laden, rather cool if you think about it. I'll be seeing them at the funeral next week...

Then, tonight, I stumbled upon this link. It reduced me to tears. People think of surfers as anti-establishment, anti-troop, etc. This proved that theory wrong.

I'll let you click on it and get the chills I got.
