    Default Charvel Veneer Project...WHY?

Charvel Veneer Project...WHY? For me, my Basswood body blank had a small defect just under the surface. It was all but removed during the forearm contouring but not completely. I repaired the damage and it literally laid on a shelf for almost a year before I decided to TRY veneering the surface.

After researching veneer applications, I discovered that it was a little more involved than simply gluing the veneer to the body. It involved using a cold press chemical resistant glue along with a vacuum compressor system that produced a large amount of down force on the veneer.

Not willing to invest the money in a vacuum press, I decided to try another approach. A vacuum storage bag, tape segments one inch apart around the parameter & seam and surface weight. I honestly didn't expect it to work but to my surprise, the veneer was flat and the seam was tight.

The remainder of the project was pretty straight forward. Finish the body routes, sand and mock assemble before finishing.

The assembled guitar consisted of a Japanese ProMod Charvel neck, plate and control cover. Seymour Duncan TB-11 Custom Custom & SSL-4 Quarter Pound Flat. Original Floyd Rose with Brass block & D-tuna. If I would change anything, it would be the Custom Custom. It's a nice pickup but seems too sterile.

The finish was a combination of two TransTint dyes. First, black sanded back followed by a top application of Purple. The body was then sealed with 2K poly. Sanded, then sprayed a custom mixed black-purple urethane on the back, sides and burst. A final application of 2K clear. Clear sanded and buffed.

The project was fun and I learned more than I wanted to. Thanks for looking....

Very Cool. Love the colour and the finish looks outstanding. Can you tell me about the choice of 2K Poly?

Thanks--without going into too much detail, it's the same catalyzed polyurethane found in body shops. The finish is hard and is easy to sand and buff. You can also shoot color on top of it, then use it to top coat the color which is what I did in this project. It's good all around. You have to use a respirator at the very least when using this because it is toxic--(like other paints aren't.)

Thanks Jimi - great call! It definitely lives up to it's description - fat, punchy high output. I think the DeMartini would compliment the QP nicely...crap! -HA!
