Default Autopsy: Beaten NC boy, 4, had alcohol in system

CANDLER, N.C. A 4-year-old Buncombe County boy was legally drunk when he was beaten to death by someone who also broke the child's ribs and teeth and bit him, according to an autopsy. A man who lived with his mother has been charged in his death.

Trenton Michael Scott had a blood alcohol content of 0.12 percent, well above the legal limit for driving of 0.08 percent, according to the autopsy by a forensic pathologist at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Patrick Lantz told the Asheville Citizen-Times that he believes Trent ingested the alcohol.

The autopsy also concluded that Trent died from a laceration to his liver caused by blunt force trauma to the abdomen and chest. Lantz also found evidence of ligature strangulation of the child's neck, eight broken ribs, a fractured skull, broken teeth, bite marks on his back and chest and numerous cuts and bruises.

Charged in the child's death is William Godfrey Hedden, 24, who lived with Trent's mother in a mobile home in Candler. Hedden is being held without bond in the Buncombe County Jail with a probable cause hearing scheduled for Sept. 12. His attorney, Robert Campbell of Taylorsville, said Wednesday he hadn't seen the autopsy report and declined comment on the case.

District Attorney Ron Moore has said he will seek the death penalty in the case.

Although one toxicologist said it's possible the alcohol came from fermentation of bacteria in the body after the child was killed, Lantz said he didn't believe that's what happened because the blood alcohol level was so high.

Trent was reported to have been put to bed about 7:30 p.m. April 18, according to the report. The next morning, his mother, Heather Benson, found her son injured and called 911. "Oh, my God," she told the dispatcher, sobbing. "He looks like he's been beaten to death."

Relatives have told the Citizen-Times that Benson, who is not charged in her son's death, is heartbroken and unable to return to the mobile home where she lived with her son and Hedden. She and Trent's father, Justin Scott, held separate memorial and graveside services for their son. Police have said Benson was in the home the night her son was beaten.

Justin Scott has said Benson was a good mother, although he said she prevented him from seeing Trenton very often in the last year of his life even though the two had joint custody. The couple never married and broke up in March 2010.
