You know the problem: You want to burn your own ass-kicking Van Halen Best Of-CD, but the songs from the older albums are not loud enough and lack at the bottom end. That ain't rockin...
But I have a solution for ya (drumroll):
    BUY THE REMASTERS!! *lol*
What? Yeah, that's a good question...what aboot 5150 and OU812 (are you Canadian? )? They're just not loud enough to make grandmas pussy wet. (the cat, of course)
Well, ladies'n'gentlemen...here is what I did: All you need is WinAmp and a program to copy the CD-Audio tracks to the harddrive (HP CD-Creator for example). Copy the tracks of your choice to the harddrive, so that you have them as .WAV files. Then start WinAmp and play the songs. Play with the equalizer settings (crank that fuckin' low end up!!) and put up the pre-amp level a little bit. Once when your satisfied with the sound,go to the options menu (right mouse button) and click on preferences. Then go to the output plugins and choose the Nullsoft DiskWriter. Play the songs and wait 'til the program has re-written them on the harddrive. Don't forget to change back to the normal audio plugin. Put the new files (for example: old file - panama.WAV -> new file 01-panama.wav.WAV) in the playlist and set the equalizer back to default. Play the songs and compare them to the songs of the newer albums. If they're too loud or sill not loud enough, do it again and play with the pre-amp settings 'til you think it's ok.

This worked perfectly for me, let me know, if you have questions or if you want to praise me...

That's pretty cool dude! I'll give it a shot. I often have troubles with mp3s being different in level and equalisation too. I'll let you know if it works for me.

A buddy of mine did something similar to that. Of course he is a computer geek. Kudos to you...you da man! I already bought the remasters. I like the repackaging. I'll tell you what, I might try OU812. It needs help.

I don't think you're going to be able to save OU812 without the original tracks and a studio console.

Just try it and see. It's not professional, but it's easy to do and it's a huge improvement. I still hope for a real remastered OU812, though...

Ain't that the truth. OU812 sounds pretty beat. Everything sounds dead on that record even Ed's Marshall.

unfortunately, that is simply the equivalent of messing with your radio's eq knobs and recalling those presets.

it will sound good to your ears at your computer, but it won't translate to a walkman, car, or PA system.

remastering and remixing are like taking all the built up wax residue and dirt on an old car and creating a new showroom shine. it goes far beyond simple eq.

then again, as long as you are enjoying it, who cares?

Nah, I "remastered" some tracks from 5150 and OU812 for my personal Best Of, and it works fine. It's not just playing around with the EQ: The WinAMP disk-writer plugin squeezes the sound throught the EQ, but instead of sending a signal to the soundcard, it records the song to the harddrive as a new .WAV file.

I've made an MP3 of Summer Nights. I'm on Napster for the next hours, search for Van Halen-Summer Nights (Remastered). My name on Napster is SwissHalen (what else)...

This seems like alot of work when Van Halen could do it for us.

I'm with that! All of us lazy VH fans need to not unite and rise up to force remasters because, well, that would be too much work

I usually just normalize the peaks and raise the track volume when I make them MP3s.

like i said, if it works for your own ears, knock yourself out.

it's a shame we all don't have access to a properly built room with $$$$$$$$ monitors and a rack of audio tools.

i'll tell you this, though - the original 6 cds sound far and away better on any system.
they are the best remasters i've heard issued of any artist - including the entirely remasterd zeppelin & doors catalogs.
