Default Question for the car guys...

Tire pressures - what's on the tire, or what's on the manufacturer's door sticker? There's quite a discrepancy with mine - the tires say 40 psi, while the door sticker says 30 (and for the same type of tires I have on there). I did pump them up a little bit while I was in New York (to around 33 psi) and have gotten better mileage, but by the same token I don't want to do something that's going to cause them to wear faster or even fail.

Go with the manufacturer. Should be on the door jam on the front drivers side door.

I was told to go in between the manufacturer recommendation and the tire maker recommendation. Remember, as you drive, the tires heat up and the air inside expands. Especially in your case, where you're doing a lot of highway driving.

I split the difference (if there is one) between the door and tire pressures. Never had a problem with doing that...

always check your pressure when the tyre is cold then fill to whatever the manufactuer suggests then add a couple of pounds. over inflating a tyre actually reduces its ability to grip the road, under inflating it increases it's heating and you risk a blow-out. but adding just a couple of pounds (2-5psi) is fine and you get slightly better fuel consumption.

Pretty much dead on.....besides over time the tires will loose some air, so over inflating a couple of pounds will give you a little more time before you will need to add more. Over inflating too much will make your automobile ride much rougher.

I think what they put on the tire itself is the max you would want to run. I usually go in between, I always run a little more air during the winter too, especially around here where it goes from hot summers to really cold winters.

What he said. The psi number on the tire is usually the max rated pressure for that tire.

    I always split the difference.

I like the tires to be a bit harder - provides better handling and improved fuel economy.

The risk is that you tend to scallop the tires (wear out the center sooner) - but that's a fair while off...

Usually a pound or two more that what is on the door. You tire may be rated for a much larger load than what the vehicle actually needs, so pumping it up to 35psi may actually cause excessice wear towards the middle of the tread.
