    Default Summer Nights

I read on VHND: "The band worked on this song with Roth before Sammy joined, and they still have demos with Roth singing on it."
Anybody of you ever heard this tune with Dave´s vocals ??

Would be a cool opener for the upcoming tour.......

Not to me. Don't know what it was before, but that song kind of became and signifies the whole bromance era of van hagar. It'd just be awkward to see Roth try to do something with it to me.

I'm also thinking that it would have had completely different lyrics, if any at all, while in the early stages while Dave was still with them. Might not have had anything to do with the Summer Nights theme of the song the way it ended up with Sammy in the band. Still, if one day the vaults are opened up (which is highly doubtful) it would be interesting to hear all of these song variations.

Isn't the story that Sammy went over Eddie's house to audition; Ed started playing what would be Summer Nights and Sammy free styled the lyrics but came up with the chorus on the spot? (I think it may have seen it on "Unleashed".

That sounds about right, and he may have even mentioned it in his book. I read it a few months ago but loaned it out to someone so I can't double check.

Too akward and confusing to probably all fans of the band, but it would be awesome to hear the original demo with Roth vocals. I am sure it would very different, but of course similar.

It'll never happen but it WOULD be fun to hear Dave's take on the tune...

I'd love to hear it. If it was an early demo it might have it's share of scatting etc as DlR has said he'd often come up with a melody and stuff and sometimes just scat through parts that he was feeling b4 all the lyrics came to him etc. Would be cool to hear. Love the music on that tune. Needless to say but it would be great to hear any unreleased or unfinished stuff they have.

From The Inside magazine #2 (Summer 1995):

The Inside: After 1984, were you already working on new material with Roth? At what point did he leave?

Alex: We had already been in the studio for three months. I've got demos of Roth singing "Summer Nights"....

I'm sure they had to fight him hard to keep the lyrics "bozadee bozadee bop zitty bop" out of that song! Thank god for Sammy.

To the majority of the people here, "Summer Nights" cannot be improved upon, it's a VH classic from that era.

Now if you say "Source of Infection," then it's another story...

I agree with that. "Source..." would have been an incredible Roth-era tune.

    After all these years, still?

    Really?

    Sam vs. Dave.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Not really. Dave hasn't written anything memorable since 1988. Hopefully, he had help with the lyrics this time like he did on the 1996 Best Of from Glen Ballard. Not sure if you can call them lyrics, really, since most of his "singing" lately is just talking the words. We will see what he comes up with though.
