Default CREEM Going Back To Print!

An iconic, sardonic rock `n' roll magazine with Detroit roots that ceased regular print publication two decades ago is planning a comeback.

The publishing team behind Creem says it's restarting the presses in September for the magazine that officially shut down in 1988, was revived a few years later and has been online-only since 2001.

They envision the quarterly publication as part of a broader music network that includes mobile apps and streaming music videos. The aim: attract old and new readers.

Magazine expert Samir Husni says the idea is great but execution will be difficult. There was talk of another Creem return after Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical movie "Almost Famous" renewed interest. Though known for his Rolling Stone connection, Crowe wrote for Creem as a teenager under editor Lester Bangs.
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

I used to love Creem Magazine. They did a great job at covering VH back in the day.

They put together a couple of VH only "special" editions that I was lucky enough to get a hold of back in the day. Tremendous work in a time when there was not internet, etc. Still have a lot of the pics from those mags.

They put out a great hard cover book a few years ago that compiled some of their best articles through the entire original publication run that included a 1985 Roth interview just before he left Van Halen. At it's best, Creem was a really fun rock music magazine that rarely took any of the bands they were writing about seriously. One of the Van Halen-related highlights was a 8 page photo-comic using photos of the Roth era band with amusing captions.

I actually have a pretty large box of vintage Creem and Kerrang magazines from the late 70's through the mid 80's collecting dust in the garage that I should probably do something with one of these days.

I thought Circus was better but CREEM was definitely close behind. Ahh, those were the days......I used to spend all of my allowance on A) records and magazines B) bike parts C) video games and D) junk food and movies. Damn, the 80's were a good time to grow up in

I seem to remember reading in one issue that one of the lowlights of 1983 was "No Van Halen album".

Creem ruled. Some of the funniest writing I've ever seen for a magazine. I idolized Rick Johnson and JD Kordosh as much as some of the entertainers they were writing about. It was like National Lampoon (the magazine, anybody remember that one?) for rockers. Hope they keep it exactly like it was.

Read Creem occasionally, but I agree with Circus being pretty damn good back in the day. Hit Parader also. Heard they all got pretty bad. Last issues of any of 'em I ever got were around 87' maybe.
BTW dude......Your financial priorities mirrored mine to a "T"!
'Cept I did spend a few bucks here and there on guitar parts too.

Never was a regular reader of any of them, but if someone had a copy lying around (or if I was grocery shopping with my mom), I would look 'em over looking to see what they had to say about my favourite bands. I should think it would be rough sledding to bring 'em back today as I'm not sure what bands they would write about!

loved Creem...worked in a bookstore and convinced the owner to carry it (so I could read for free) and we sold it out every month.

loved Circus too..but no music mag had the attitude that Creem had

    Boy Howdy is right!!!!!

This is great to hear. I hope they keep it the same.

I was a faithful reader of CREEM and Circus back in the day. I still got my old issues too.

The Van Halen I grew up on showed up at the party, drank all your alcohol and fucked your girlfriend. The Sammy era seemed more like spending a Saturday night alone with your girlfriend telling her how much you love her. - Sickman, summing it all up for me!
