Your Favorite Classical Pieces and Performances

Lately I haven't stopped listening to this guy. I love the cello. Love the strings. This young man's mastery of the instrument is an absolute delight.

Andreas Brantelid, 24, from Scandinavia. He got game. Been shredding on the international scene since he was 18.

This is great. Absolutely rocks. What a tune. What a performance.
The Final of the International Paulo Cello Competition 2007. (of course he took 1st prize)

This is the one that got me hooked. Happened on this performance by chance last year and it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard...

    Performing Schubert Arpeggione.

What are some of your favorites? Post 'em.

Im not that well-versed in classical music, but this entire symphony just does something to me.......it's like a soundtrack to a film that doesnt exist except in the imagination.

This is part 2 (my favorite) a 3 part symphony.

I like the Paul Gilbert "Guitars from Mars". There are a LOT of vids of this on youtube if y'all like electric guitar versions of classic classical stuff. Plus that asian dude that plays on 2 guitar necks at the same time with string dampeners. (sp?)
    Just go for it!

That was awesome. Lots of horns.
I noticed in the comments that Ridley Scott used the latter part of that piece for the end credits in the movie Alien. Makes sitting through the credits of one of my favorite movies worthwhile. Very nice piece of music.

FUCK'N A!!!! I knew there was a reason that piece resonated with me so much. I just pulled out my VHS (yes.....VHS) of "alien" and there it was at the end credits!

    Most awesome research, dude.

The funny thing is that I have the official sondtrack of "Alien" by Jerry Goldsmith, and nary a sign of the Howard Hanson track on it. Strange how Hollywood works.

Cool. I want to hear the cd and full songs. All I can find are some "Guitar from Mars" teasers from one of his instructional vids.

That reminded me about this Chris Broderick (Megadeth guitarist) classical guitar clip I found last year.

If you want to know what genius sounds like, it's Glenn Gould playing Bach.

A composer I've been very excited about lately is Steve Reich. He's been around for forty years, but I just this year discovered him. I guess you could call him a "classical" composer because he uses orchestral instruments, but his music is from another planet.

My favorite Reich stuff is his experiments with "phasing." Phasing is often heard when two notes are almost in tune with each other, or two musical parts are played at almost the same time, just milliseconds apart. The notes kind of bump against each other and some frequencies can get cancelled out.

In "Violin Phase" the second violin is playing the same set of notes as the first violin, but a little bit faster. It's a very strange effect. When the other two violins drop in and out, it gets even weirder.
You don't have to listen to the whole thing to get it, just a few minutes. However, fellow musicians should check out the end (9:30) and note that everybody stops at the same instant perfectly. That's very hard to do. Play the same musical phrase over and over again for nine minutes while somebody stands next to you and plays it at a different speed, then everybody stops on a dime. Can you count that? I can't.

Reich is primarily a percussion expert. Here's a thing for four tuned drums that's very freaky.

    'cause it's always been there...

    George Gershwin: Allegro agitato-
really like this one, once you listen to it you can hear just about everyone in it. A li'l star wars, a li'l van halen, even back to the old cartoons. Pure good stuff.

I dont know if you call it classical but,
    Yanni: Live At The Acropolis-
    dont wake this boy...

Right on. That's all cool stuff. Good listening. Especially enjoyed the Rachmanivov piano concerto.

Slayer's got nothing on Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.

I've been listening to Glenn Gould's recordings of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier for years, though not as much as I used to. Incredible stuff.
