Default The 9 Foods the US Government is Paying for You to Eat

Over the past 15 years, the federal government paid nearly $150 billion in subsidies to U.S. farmers. It paid $77 billion to plant corn in the U.S. between 1995 and 2010; $32.4 billion to plant wheat; and $24.4 billion to plant soybeans. All of that money came from American taxpayers. The question is whether Americans received any benefit at all from these subsidies.

A subsidy is, according to the Environmental Working Group, “a ‘safety net’ paid by the government to provide financial incentive for farmers to grow certain crops in the place of others.” Because farmers can only plant so many crops, these subsidies direct what farmers are willing to grow.

Massive carb injection from uncle sammy. No wonder we're so fat, allergic to everything, and sickly as a nation.

I think the ultimate US government is that they simultaneously pay to find ways to get us to eat more cheese while also paying to let us know that eating cheese is bad and we should eat less.

This wasn't in this story, but it's related.

But yes, keeping sugar artificially high (and corn artificially low) is why sodas use corn syrup. Some say it's worse (not proven), but we have the government to thank for that.

You don't even really realize how crap US food is until you spend any amount
of time out of the country. Even when I thought I was eating healthy there, I
really wasn't. Americans are fat (among other reasons) because shit food
(fast food) is the cheapest. It's the exact opposite at least in SE Asia, where
it's very efficient to eat healthy and direct. McDonald's is a once-in-a-while
treat, as it was for me as a kid and as it should today be for most people.
I lost probably 15 lbs of water weight without even trying just moving here.
    So come on over.

I believe high fructose corn syrup has been banned in most places of the world due to the shitty affect it has on our system...seriously

It is still inconclusive, despite what a lot of people say.

But sugar is much cheaper in the rest of the world. In order to keep soda cheaper here, we use corn syrup because of the artificial pricing by the government.
