Default Ex-Van Halen Bassist Called '04 Reunion "Uncomfortable"

Ex-Van Halen Bassist Called '04 Reunion "Uncomfortable"
    By Tim Cashmere

Van Halen are heading to Australia for the first time since the late 90s, when they came here with the oft-forgotten third singer Gary Cherone. While this upcoming tour marks the first time they’ve been down under with original singer David Lee Roth in tow, original bassist Michael Anthony has been replaced by Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgang.

Let’s face it, there isn’t a Van Halen fan on earth that would rather see three original members + Gary Cherone over three original members + Wolfgang Van Halen, but it’s always interesting to pry into the inner workings of bands, particularly when once upon a time they truly ruled the world.

In an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Anthony said that when he reunited with Van Halen in 2004, “Eddie didn’t want me on that tour anyway, because I was a ‘traitor,’ because I sided with and was jamming with [second Van Halen singer Sammy] Hagar.”

He was referring to the band Chickenfoot, which features Anthony, Hagar, guitarist Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith.

The band are gearing up to release their second album, due out in September, entitled ‘Chickenfoot IV’. At least you can’t say they don’t have a sense of humour...

“It’s four friends getting together and having a good time,” Anthony said. “I guess a lot of that has to do with, you know, we’ve all had our own careers and done really well. So, it’s not like we have anything to prove, and we don’t need to do it for the money, so we can do it just purely for the enjoyment of making music.”

Van Halen are heading to Australia in September/October as part of the Soundwave Revolution tour. Check them out at:

    SEPTEMBER

    24 - Brisbane
    25 - Sydney
    30 - Melbourne

    OCTOBER

    1 - Adelaide
    3 - Perth

Is he saying that every VH-fan would rather see VHIV than III? Did I read it right? If so, what a foolish, foolish thing to say. I personally would enjoy much more hearing music from all the eras instead of only 25+ years old songs only. (No, I don't exactly miss Gary Cherone, but their setlists were good.)

If it wasn't for that one sentence, I wouldn't have even bothered posting that rehashed article. Van Halen fans of Earth... you know who you are.

How hard is it for a journalist to actually do some research on freaking Wikipedia and learn that Chickenfoot didn't exist until 2008?

2004 was wild. I saw the band so many times. Best was in Vegas where we were front row at the Orleans arena. Ed gave me two picks, but he put a cigarette in his mouth and I pointed at him and went "NO!!!" and he spit it out. MA looked over with a big smile on his face. I also stuck the two picks Eddie gave me (red and yellow frankenstripe) to my head hoping to get a MA one, but MA wouldn't come over to Eddie's side. Finally in a highlight, I had bought two large Miller lites and handed one to Sammy who drank it and then passed it to MA who saluted and took a sip and then my night was complete!

You could see the dynamics and the lack of comfort they had with each other....

love your story!!! during RHRN tour we saw them at nissan pavilion in virginia, we were second row but pushed forward and got to sing into the mic. for unchained!!!!!!!!! then i snuck in a disposable camera and got awesome pic of mike lighting his bass with lighter fluid ala hendrix!!!!! ive seen them more times then i can put in order and count. (not too many to count, just cant pull them all together to quantify) but this was the most awesome, and have had front row 4 or 5 five times, and im a dave era fan first but loved sam era as well. my point is.......how lucky are we to actually interact with them during what may not be in there memory but in our minds knock down badd ass shows. oh also forgot that sam wore a banner that we made that had ed's name and then put it on ed to wear. fuck man those memories are priceless. again im a dave era fan but i dont have those stories for that era. p.s im dr\unk and rambling but this fuckin band is unreal no matter what era it is in. and i still cant believe how badd fucking ass ed came back. cause he is the common denominator in what i love, which is VAN FUCKING HALEN. eddie you pulled off what i thought there was no way you could. im 40 fuckin years old and you r making me feel like im 16 again. it has been almost 3 mos. and i cant stop listening or thinking about how bad ass this album is and how old you guys are and how there is no reason you should rock this fucking hard. you are no less than bad asss mother fuckers!!!! sorry im drunk u fuckers!!!!hahaha

The 04 Tour would have been fine if Ed was in the shape he's in now. It would have been great, actually, because the new songs they recorded wouldn't have been garbage and maybe they would have found some inspiration. Hell, they wanted to do a full record, didn't they? Eddie couldn't handle it so they settled for the three cruddy BOBW songs.

The fact that Sam and Mike's last go around with the band was Ed's worst tour ever fuels 99.9 percent of their feelings about him. As we've seen with Dave, everything else is forgettable and forgiveable if there's enough money on the table. I actually wouldn't mind them hitting it with Sam one more time if Ed could do it straight. I still loved a lot of those songs. But the Mike/Wolf formula doesn't compute, unfortunately and that's where the whole thing hits the wall.
