    Default Wolfie's rig last tour

Been kind of slow in here lately so I thought I'd throw this one in for discussion. I don't blame anyone however if it generates almost no interest. I would occasionally think of how strange it was that Wolfie's side of the stage last tour also had the same 5150 III stacks that were on Ed's side- well, when he had a side before the break. Of course we know those pairs of heads and most of the cabs are all for show, Ed's real 5150 III heads being off the side of the stage. He is mic'd through a few of the lower EVH cabs however. I'll admit that both times I saw the show live (second time from the 5th row) I really wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to Wolfie. Looking at some clips though I see at least one of the lower cabs on his side is mic'd up. Clearly he is a guitarist (some say an even better drummer) filling the role of bassist. I kept thinking how he didn't even have a really good punchy low bass tone, that the bass was basically buried in the mix. Then I was reading some threads on various sites and yes he is using that Franken-bass with the bridge pickup which probably gives a thin tone. Then I found this blurb on his "rig" and I found this to be a strange combination to be playing live bass through. It sure explains his lack of a distinctive bass tone through- bass through 20W Celestion Greenback speakers, and a Variac being used live in 2007/2008?

Now if Ed would get out his Variac and old Marshall gear for the next tour that would be another thing entirely, although there's absolutely no hope for that. ha

"Wolfgang plays through a vintage Sound City 200 Plus head and two EVH 5150 III 4x12 cabinets loaded with G12 EVH 20s, the same 20-watt Celestion speakers that Ed uses. Basically it's a 200 watt all-tube guitar amp. We sag the power down to 70 volts with a Variac because if you run the amps full bore, they'll blow up the speakers."

Yeah, but this guy even has one up on Wolf since at least he's using his fingers to air bass. LOL If I recall Wolf used a pick for most of the show, which again does not help with bass tone.

I figured this thread was going to generate a few pokes at Wolfie.

I have a 6 year old daughter and I noticed the Barbie right away. In fact my wife just got her 1970's vintage Barbie motor home from her mom's basement and cleaned it up recently. I pretty much dig 70's stuff, no matter what it is. That thing is so big a small child could almost ride in it.

Anyway, this thread was meant to be a constructive discussion and dissection of Wolfie's bass rig. Why was the kid playing bass through a guitar amp and fizzy classic rock-oriented speaker cabs instead of Ampeg SVT gear, that sort of thing. Of course since he had basically no cred other than his name prior to that tour the thread could take many different turns. hehe

I don't personally believe any of the conspiracy theories that Wolf didn't play during the '07/'08 tour. There may have been some stuff pre-recorded that accompanied songs (like keys and background vocals), but from what I saw standing there watching them, he was playing. I also know he was playing because he was pushing the time a little (like what most young players do). That being said, I thought the EVH amps and cabs stage right were just for show. But maybe not (?). Wolf should be playing bass amps.
