With all apologies to my EUAS brothas and their Jedi council of founders,I went to see Sambo at a club Wednesday night! Before anyone screams,"Judas!," lemme explain...

Sammy played a warm-up gig at a local club(announced the day-of)and it was pretty cool! Don't get me wrong,DAVE IS STILL GOD,but the show was pretty entertaining...

Me and a fellow Roth-head entered Redheadland around 5PM--Sammy took the stage at midnight. The waiting wasn't so bad--it actually went pretty quickly. The ROCK was playin' some UNBOXED--GAWD I hate "Buying my way into heaven!"

    Surprize factor?
We were talkin' Roth before the show--I think Van Rothin' might just be able to sneak up and CONQUER THE WORLD AFTER ALL--everyone is still stuck on bashing Dave for Vegas and for his lid. I was braggin' 'bout seein' Dave on his DLR BAND tour, though.

Anyhoo, lots of babes and lots o' mullets in the crowd. They passed out around 180 bracelets--we was mighty close to bein' outta luck. I think this bar had 200-250 people max--and it wasn't sardines.

We were arguing Dave vs. Sam once we got inside the gig with these chicks--some great points were made by us. "Dave made Van Halen and Van Halen made Sam..." That pissed 'em off. When this dumbass broad was sayin' that Sam is a bettah singer--he can hit the higher notes--I asked her if Johnny Cash wasn't a good singer either. She also thought Sam's lyrics were superior...hopeless! Uh oh,here comes her mullet-headed boyfriend...I hate when people slam Dave, get put in their place, and then resort to Vegas rips and bald rips...anyway,we managed to not brawl and we made it clear that Dave was king, but we had no problem saluting the 'president'--it was a free gig afterall.

My highlights were Space Station #5(too young to have seen Montrose),Whole Lotta Love, a blistering Who Do You Love, and a cool Born To Be Wild. He only played one 'ballady' number,Give to live, and at least it wasn't acoustic. The band was heavy and loud. Not much talkin' by Sam--I liked that--no death penalty speeches! I wish there woulda been a harmonica solo in Little White Lie.

Setlist, not exact order and not sure if complete:

    Rock n roll weekend
    Space Station #5
    "5150"
    Amsterdam
    Whole Lotta Love/Red
    Give to live
    Right on Right
    Heavy Metal
    High and Dry Again
Who Do You Love/Little White Lie
3-4 new tunes mixed into set(one was called Shock-a-doobie and one had 3 in the title--a reference to VHIII?)
One way to rock(not nearly as cool w/o Eddie!!)
    Dave can drive 55
    Red Voodoo

I'm all Sammy-ed out,not catchin' his Riverport gig,but all in all,I think it was pretty cool of the guy to play a free club show.

Sam played "5150" and "Amsterdam"??? I wished he played those tunes when I saw him last summer on his Red Voodoo tour.
Hey, nothing wrong with seeing Sammy. You need something to pass the time before Van Halen rises from the ashes.

"5150" without Ed?? That just doesn't work. "One Way To Rock" is a very so-so song without Ed's guitar, he made that tune work live. It's OK to say you enjoyed a Sammy show Loons, I enjoyed DLR's Vegas thing.

I saw sammy during his last tour and his guitar player tried to play a couple different VH songs and just couldn't quite pull them off. I was almost embarrased for him, I felt like I was watching a cover band, but luckily sammy saved the concert. That guy puts on a great show, even with a shitty band. He really keeps the fans involved. I would go see sammy in a second if the chance arose.

Sammy has always been able to rock. Thanks for the report..I wish I was there to catch it.
Sammy's band is somewhat tight, they play what they are capable of, and that is for the most part, party..let's drink..rock'n' roll. Entertaining, but I wish Sammy was back playing with Halen.

Sammy puts on a great show. I'm pissed I'm not going to be able to see him tonight. That's twice that he's been around here in the past 8 months or so, and I haven't been able to go to either.

Brett, before last night I would have agreed with you regarding playing "5150" without Ed but I was at the St. Louis show last night and let me just say, "wow!" Victor has definitely gotten better--still no Ed but oh well. Without getting into the 'who is better than who' shit, though, last night's show was by far the best show I've ever seen with Sammy--solo or with Van Halen. He has definite ties to the city of St. Louis and maybe that had somehthing to do with it but I was blown away. I couldn't believe that they did "5150" but I have to say it was great and the cover of "Whole Lotta Love" was pretty cool too. Sam is a true performer and showman. Last night's show did settle the Roth v. Hagar thing to me, though--he's better off without them. I don't know if they will be better off without him (though I hope that they are and that they do well with Roth) but he is in his element as a soloist. Anyway, great show, great party atmosphere...."2 thumbs up!"

Sammy hauled some major ass last night (7/22) at Rockfest in Wisconsin. One of the best Sammy shows I've seen.

    Anybody else here catch it?
