Van Halen get some kudos from The Observer newspaper today.

For those outside the UK, The Observer is a broadsheet Sunday newspaper, somewhat left leaning, and has a lot of arts coverage and critique. The nearest American equivalent would be the New York Times, I think. In other words, about the last publication I'd expect to give props to Van Halen's contribution to rock history, but...

They had a supplement included in today's paper which was basically a chronological fifty greatest moments in rock list. At number thirty two was Van Halen Invent Hair Metal. It was one of the longest pieces in the list, and it really paid respect to the Mighty VH. This quote stood out for me:

"That debut was nothing short of a paradigm shift in the sound of heavy music, as important as Jimi Hendrix's first record had been a decade before, and Nirvana's second would be in closing the era Van Halen began."

Of course, that's nothing we didn't know already, but it's nice to see a high end newspaper paying VH their dues.

The whole piece is online here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011...nt-hair-metal/

Wow! As you say, unusual for the UK press to even acknowledge the existence of VH, let alone dedicate an entire piece to them...And, they're rightly appreciative of the band. Good stuff!

I never considered Halen to be a hair metal band though. I considered them to be a very good hard rock band. Hair Metal to me is Motley Crue, LA Guns, Cinderella etc.

Yup that is what most with any musical intelligence would agree with.
Wolfie is not Mike, but he's more than ok.
Mike is gone, but not forgotten. They played some amazing shows from 2007-2015; some people are in denial about it.

I'd never actually encountered the term 'hair metal' until I started coming on here (maybe that makes me a musical ignoramus but there you go). We always referred to the bands with big hair doing rock / metal music as 'soft rock'. Did the term simply denote the band's hairstyles? In which case, I suppose VH do fit that description...I've really no idea what it means - maybe somebody could enlighten me?

"Hair Metal" is typically used to describe what started on the LA club scene with the likes of Motley Crue, Poison, etc. For most of us, it also included tons of make up...most do not consider the bands that preceded that era (Van Halen included) to be included in that.

I think the gist of the article, though, is that bands like Motley Crue and Ratt were spawned in Van Halen's wake. I don't consider VH hair metal, but they established a sound that blended pop elements with heavy guitar that would then be picked up by the west coast bands that followed. If you look at photos of Van Halen from around 1980, or maybe the Hot for Teacher and Panama videos, they kind of look like hair metal's older, uglier half brother.

You could argue that Kiss were also a precursor to hair metal, but I think DLR's aesthetic is closer to Vince Neil's and the rest of the front men that came after.

I don't think categorising bands is all that helpful, really. If you like the music, who cares what terminology may be used by the masses to describe them? In any case, I don't think the article was using the term perjoratively in its analysis of Van Halen - the general thrust was very positive and celebratory - which, in the light of this being in a UK newspaper, is a bloody good (and unusual) thing!

We used to call VH "Progressive Rock" back in the day. It's like calling Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith "Hair Metal". Just doesn't fit.

Progressive Rock? Progressive Rock to me is Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes, Genesis & King Crimson. The only thing that you could categorize VH as progressive is Ed's playing. That's about it.

Van Halen couldn't be hair metal. Alex had curly hair, and that's not authorized in hair metal. Case closed.

I don't think VH was a hair band either.

BUT, I've always contended they spawned it. Look at the fashions and the music. Most guitar players at the time. They weren't exact copies, but they sure as hell tried to be.

VH had talent. Hair bands pretty much showed they didn't. At least not with song writing ability.

Don't like to see references for VH being a hair band. But all those hair bands wanted to be VH.
