    Default Your Summer Job Story

Everyone has been there...low man on the totem pole of the economy, whipping boy for the full timers.....the SUMMER JOB!

I had it easy...never had to look for a summer job, cause growing up in a summer resort, my job was always looking for me, and my Dad was always counting on me being his summer slave

you would think that the bosses daughter would have it easy, but somehow the bosses daughter got stuck with cleaning up the door mat after a drunken fisherman crapped a grand slam breakfast on it, or coming up with a creative way to clean up after a bunch of under aged drinkers (wet vac...yuck)

so I have to wonder....what's your best/worst summer job story?

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

First job started as filling in as the clown at the local skating rink when one of the employees didn't show. It ended up with me getting a part time job there which I kept all through high school...also worked there on and off up until I moved in late 2001, when I was the general manager of the facility. I am still good friends with the family who owns the business.

Mine was working for a summer program where teenagers went around the local counties doing tree and bush trimming for the Housing Projects. I remember chopping down this fugly bush when this white trash bitch came running out drunker that hell cussing at me with her cocktail in hand. That stank bitch reeked of straight booze and this was before lunch. The supervisor shut her little ass up mentioning calling the law so she went back inside. I whacked that bush down just smiling and singing while she gave me the stink eye thru the ripped screen door!

I topped corn and moved irrigation pipe. The real money was hauling hay and straw. I made $3.25 and hour. I was 12 at the time. May first check was over $100. My mom drove me to the bank for cash. I bought the usual 12 year old stuff; But managed to keep a crisp $100 bill in my pocket for awhile. I remembering feeling rich!

For 2 summers in college, I worked in a paint distribution warehouse. The main thing was filling out orders. You get the order, get the paints and/or supplies and put them on a pallet to be wrapped up and shipped out.

Certainly had some "interesting" characters working there. I was in the minority because I didn't have an arrest record.

For a couple summers I would help out on job sites for my family's plumbing company. I knew I didn't want to be a plumber, but this cemented it:

One time I was helping my Dad's cousin (a plumber for over 20 years) take out a stack at an old house in St. Louis. It was cast iron, so to get it out you have to bust it with a sledge. So I watch as he pounds the thing a couple times to get it to break, but when he finally does, sewage spurts out on his face, including his mouth.

He casually spits and says: "It's amazing I don't have AIDs."
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

My first year working was when I was about 13 I think. I had a paper route...the most brutal, hilly route imaginable in Jacksonville Oregon. That sucked. I also had a part time gig detailing used cars at a car lot down in Medford at the same time.

At the end of the summer I bought a rad bike, and blew most of the rest on a Kegger where I got to third base with a lil' hunny.

So, you were working this pape route and your brother, Alex was at home playing your drum set that you paid for from working? So, you decided to take his guitar, and the rest was history?

    Kick ass!!!

Weekend and summer job from age 15 to 17 - care assistant for psycho-geriatrics. Had commode full of piss thrown over me; got chased by a mad 89 year old wielding a knife and fork; had to do a regular Tuesday night bingo and disco session for elderly lunatics...Ah yes, happy memories.

During my college years (early 1990's), I worked at my dad's store in Rehoboth Beach, DE. The shop was on Rehoboth Avenue. For the most part, it was a pleasant experience. Ate cheesesteak and grinders daily for lunch. The most striking experiences were probably the ones that involved getting hit on by many of the male clientelle at the store. This would often occur while my girlfriend was with me. Instead of confronting the guys hitting on me, she would stay amused while watching from a distance.

I think the funnest summer job I ever had was delivering pizzas. It doesnt sound very exciting but it helped that the store I worked at was FULL of smokin hot girls! Go run a pizza to some old fat bastard, come back to hot pizza and hot TNA.

    Yeah...I miss that place.

I did a lot of helping out farmers as a youngster in Nebraska during the summers. Got paid $2.65 an hour to haul irrigation pipe through corn fields, cut down Musk Thistle in the pastures, haul hay, etc. I can still hear that old farmer laughing his ass off after he threw a hay bale up to me on the trailer. I got my hands underneath the wire and as I started to try to pick it up, I realized that I had too much of my weight forward and I was coming off of the truck whether I wanted to or not. There was no way I was getting my hands out from underneath the wire so down I went, hay bale and all and faceplanted myself into that bale. It exploded as I hit the ground and Paul exploded with laughter once he saw that I was okay.

I also did a couple of summers working on the power lines with my Dad. In the summer of '81 in western Oklahoma and the summer of '82 working just outside of Garden City, Kansas. Many of those guys I worked with are gone now. My Dad, my old foreman and our heavy equipment operator all having gone on to work the "big job" as my Dad called it.

I never had a cool summer job. My summer jobs were always the same as my school year job--bagging groceries at Publix. Lots of fun going in and out in 100 degree heat back in the days when baggers wore long pants and shirt and ties. I see these kids now in shorts and Izod shirts and I think about how easy they have it.
